GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted June 18, 2014 Can't wait for the "free Jurco!" movement to gain steam quickly when Cleary makes the team over Jurco in September. I don't even want to believe this is truly realistic, but after last season with Nyquist... 1 Z Winged Dangler reacted to this
cnot19 191 Report post Posted June 18, 2014 Is this serious? What difference does it make if they made a verbal agreement to extend him braking it does not hurt us. He sucked last season which is putting it nicely, he does not deserve to be extended or be in the NHL with the way he is playing. Im sure his main concern was the money, which can be solved by giving him another job, but I honestly don't care if they do.
13dangledangle 968 Report post Posted June 18, 2014 It isn't hard to grasp, it is just hard to 100% believe - considering he beat out Nyquist last season when he had absolutely no business being on the team in the first place, it is not out of the realm of possibility to believe they might inexplicably give him a spot over some other youngster to start this season as well (Jurco, Mantha maybe). I think that's what is worrying most folks. My other issue is, I don't even particularly want him taking up a spot on GR either. It's already been stated by management that jobs have been taken. Kids are in, vets are out. The contract being discussed is 2-way for a reason. If he earns a spot in the lineup which I, and I think we all doubt, then more power to him. THEY HAVE SAID THIS FOREVER!! The only reason the kid movement happened at all was injuries...as long as old useless vets are here, I'm sure they'll play. rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted June 18, 2014 2 years, 6M. Get 'er done Kenny!!!!! Hopefully Holland's too busy working on the Cleary fine print to actually go out and address the teams need to become more than a retirement home. That would be awesome,,,,,, FML
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted June 18, 2014 If we trade some forwards to acquire a d-man I guess I could see us having room for Cleary on a two-way contract. I would absolutely hate it, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. If they had a gentleman's agreement I think Holland should try his best to honor that. But priority #1 is improving the team and if Holland/Babcock really think Danny has anything left to offer in that regard they're smoking some good stuff. VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted June 18, 2014 We shouldn't have to make room for Cleary. We've got so many kids ready to make the jump, and any of the UFA players are better than Cleary at this point, too. He just doesn't belong on this team or in Grand Rapids. Remember, Babcock took MONTHS to bench Cleary, even after it was clear Cleary couldn't play anymore. Other players would get demoted for having a bad shift or a turnover. Then, the second half of the season he was injured. Guarantee with a summer under his belt Babcock will play him on the Wings to see if he healed up over the summer. And, you know, a tie goes in favor of the vet. This just doesn't make any sense at all. On this issue I'm completely with the Holland bashers because none of the arguments in favor of this signing make any real sense.

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted June 18, 2014 As someone pointed out, this is basically the same deal the Wings made with Maltby. Holland gave Maltby a two-way contract and he went to camp, but even then it was clear with all the forwards they had that Maltby had little chance of making the Wings roster. He apparently had a good camp, but still not good enough to take someone else's job. Rather than head to the AHL, he retired. It's a little nerve racking because of Holland signing him last season, but I really do think this is Holland just keeping his word to a heart and soul Red Wings player. 3 krsmith17, number9 and marcaractac reacted to this
GoWings! 179 Report post Posted June 18, 2014 Obviously mind boggling because no one on these forums could possibly want this guy to ever wear a Wings jersey ever again but let's just wait til July 1st before we give up on 2014-2015.
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted June 18, 2014 I liked the 2008 Cleary... a lot. Heart and soul guy, but now he can't stay healthy. I would rather have kept Tootoo, honestly. uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted June 18, 2014 Come on you guys... Emmerton and Tootoo are gone. Good chance that Grant and Evans are probably gone from GR, too. We need some vets down there. Leadership. Hoo-rah. 'Cause that's where Dan-o's going. GR, right? Right? Doubt it. Both guys wear the A and are hugely respected in the GR organisation, especially Evans. There's no room for the Cleary donkey in the Grand Rapids inn. He will bring nothing to the team that it doesn't already have and with the veteran rotation Blashill would just bench him for most games and it would be plain sad. Cleary was one of my favourite players back in like 2008. You watch clips of him from those years and it's like a completely different player. 1 Detroit \# 1 Fan reacted to this
GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted June 18, 2014 This move only makes sense if Holland is doing it to troll Wings fans. Datsyukian-Deke 722 Report post Posted June 19, 2014 (edited) I watched all 82 Red Wings games last season and the funny thing is my jaw dropped when I saw Cleary played 52 games this season. If I would have guess i would have said around 25. That's how unmemorable he was last season. He was close to literally doing nothing for us offensively. clutchngrab 12 Report post Posted June 19, 2014 If Dan Cleary ends up wearing the Winged Wheel again this year, I will find a new team to support until Holland is gone. Oh and by the way, all of you who think a 2-way is a good idea are delusional. GR spots are pretty valuable too - especially when you need to be re-tooling via youth and there are waiver rules AND the GM has shown no ability to make a reasonable free agent signing in a number of years - (41 year old Alfie not withstanding) I watched all 82 Red Wings games last season and the funny thing is my jaw dropped when I saw Cleary played 52 games this season. If I would have guess i would have said around 25. That's how unmemorable he was last season. He was close to literally doing nothing for us offensively. I remember each and every painful game. I found it hard to not be drawn to his ineptitude on the ice.
