The Astuteness of Paul Holmgren.

"His job is to stop pucks and help us win games," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "It's not Comedy Central." Actually, the only reason why I watch the Flyers is for the comedy. -

Well, as much as Bryz just straight up sucked it in the first round with MAF, he did keep them in games in the second round. Philly needs to realize they have some giant holes in their defense and they can't expect their tendy to always be there to save your ass. Now, I understand he has a beautiful contract and is paid to be that guy, but history says he will never be that guy. I'm not even sure why and how Philly thought Bryz was going to be an all-star goalie by just coming to Philly. Holmgren is absolutely right though, he should focus on play more than just making retarded comments. The media is half to blame though, they've been down his throat trying to get the funny quotes from him. The guy is barely more advanced than Pasha when talking to the American media. **edit** someone care to explain how the hell this got neg'ed rofl -

Bettman wants to tout the "Original 12" now, haha
SaCkaveli20 and one other gave a reaction for a post in a topic
I'm just waiting for Bettman to make all 30 teams wear a 20th anniversary patch for the Nashville Predators celebrating their rich hockey history as one of the original 30. Bettman will say...The Nashville Predators and the Detroit Red Wings both share a rich history of hockey tradition and these 2 teams should be the gold standard of how to be a successful hockey franchise. Then Bettman will honour past Red Wings greats like Howe, Yzerman, Lindsay, Delvecchio and Lidstrom. While at the same time past Preds legends such as Vokoun, Legwand, Tootoo and Erat will be honoured. Bettman will close the ceremony saying...THESE 2 HISTORIC FRANCHISES MIRROR EACH OTHER IN EVERY WAY and SHOULD BE PROUD TO BE A PART OF THE ORIGINAL 30. -

Report: Jagr to test free agent market

For the right price I'd ta.........nah, no thanks! We have plenty of roster players, need Parise and Suter. I'd rather have Nyquist up permanently than Jagr.... -
1 pointOur postseason woes stem from a collection of interrelated problems. That was my main point. Example: our forward corps. The top two lines are for scoring. The bottom two lines are for everything else, e.g. wearing down the opposition through physical play. If the bottom 6 is struggling to get the job done, the top 6 will, in turn, struggle to get its job done. Babcock recently rated Helm as one of the league's best third-line centers. Do the math.

...and this is why 99% of NHL players only give boring cliché answers to every question asked by reporters. I understand they're disappointed with his play this year, but when goalie after goalie puts up terrible numbers for them, maybe it's time to realize a bit of the blame is on the defense, not on the goalie's personality. -

Original 6 is just that - original. You do not add to that, find another marketing ploy if that is the angle you're going for. -
1 pointPssht. The next thing you know, he'll be saying Ringo was one of the Original Beatles. It's not so much that it's insulting (which it is) but that in saying it, he looks like a complete idiot who knows nothing about the history of the sport (which he is). Now that I think of it... I guess this isn't anything we didn't already know. Perhaps we could call them the "O6:TNG".

#7 Washington Capitals vs. #1 New York Rangers
MidMichSteve gave a reaction for a post in a topic
The thing with Torts is that his act gets old very quickly. He is always pissed off and for no reason at all. Sure, he is an excellent head coach. One of the best in the league. But ever since he came into the NHL he has always looked for excuses to be pissed off even when being asked the most simplest of questions. It's one thing to stick up for yourself and not be bullied by the media. I don't mind when he gets pissed off when being asked a dumb question. But this guy just acts like a big baby most of the time. IMO I think he is bi-polar. All the signs are there. Maybe he thinks he has to be this way to be successful, I don't know. It seems to work for him I suppose. I would think it has to be very tiring to be pissed off all the time 24 hours a day though. He will likely burn out within the next 5 years. He should try and seek professional help for his anger problem. But he could care less what I or anyone else thinks. -

that's what media is and always was about. 29+ coaches in this league (and other major leagues as well) understand it and get over with dumb questions. in nowadays economies you need media to sell your product. especially when the product is media based. and it's actually this intermediary (streaming, reporting) who holds the power in relation with content producer (league). period. I don't. I was OK with him until recently, but just think he is pushing this too far now. for whatever reason. what I'm referring to is his 1. his total disdain to media people which is more than obvious the moment he enters the press room 2. it's done over and over again. 3. "I'm not going to answer question about single players" + "I'm not going to answer you questions about strategy" + "I'm not going into discussion of refs calls" = what exactly is Torts then going to answer? questions about his favorite apple pies? this is a god* press conference for media going to report about the game. Tortorella is simply not answering any hockey related questions. I'm OK with sending a statement to media to get real and stop asking same things over and over again. I understand that he doesn't want to single out players etc. but the way this guy behaves is more like "f* off, I'm not going to answer you anything". and he keeps doing it. and this is sure as hell against league policy to work with the media for one. and most certainly simply not fair for those people who just want to write a note or article in their paper to generate interest in NHL hockey. -

1 pointEvcery team rebuilds. The question is which is faster? Either way you do drop off. But do you wait untill everyone has retired-and get NOTHING for them? Or move them and get something back that can be part of your next upswing. We had a 15 year run that was awesome! 95-2010 there was no one better. Not even close. But now it is time to get the pieces for the next great run. No we are very very competive. we just got beat in the 1st round. We didn't win our division. As for datsyk, is he is healthy he is going to make more than he does now. 36 year olds are guys you fill in holes with, not build around. he is already slowing down over the past five years. Injuries are becoming more common. If we could move him, yes I would. But like I said, not for prospects. I look for guys in the league just comming into their prime.

Uncle Danny reacted to MabusIncarnate for a post in a topic
I'm not particularly "offended" by this, and i'm not sure really what the rage is all about. He's not standing on a podium saying historically the original six is now the original twelve and throw the tradition of the original six out the window. He could call them part of "The First Expansion six" but that's just kind of dumb. If you want to get technical the Wings joined the league 15 years after Toronto and Boston, but neither of them are trying to claim they should be "The Original Two" or anything like that. St. Louis is one of the first 12 NHL teams, just like Vancouver and Buffalo are part of the original 14, and so on and so forth. He isn't claiming to change the historical original six to the original twelve, I think the quotation was taken very out of context if you read it again, all that's being stated here is St. Louis was one of the first 12 teams to join the NHL, which in fact they were. Guys I know it's the offseason and we are really bored, but come on. If I can be honest, they can market whatever they want, I remember growing up and there being a lot of speculation if there would even be an NHL in the future because of the lack of fan base and it was a struggling sport for a long time. Anything he does to improve the status of the sport, bring in more fans, and keep it afloat doesn't bother me in the slightest, but I don't even think it will go as far as a marketing scheme or anything like that. I think it was just a completely misinterpreted quotation from an article. Just because, here's a timeline of the NHL teams and when they entered the NHL. 1917- Montreal, Toronto 1924- Boston 1926- Chicago, NYR 1932- Detroit 1967 (Expansion)- Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Dallas (Minnesota and California) 1970- Vancouver, Buffalo 1972- NYI, Caroliona (Hartford),Calgary (Atlanta) 1974- Washington, New Jersey (Kansas City and Colorado) 1979- Colorado (Quebec), Edmonton, Phoenix (Winnipeg) 1991- San Jose 1992- Ottawa, Tampa Bay 1993- Anaheim, Florida 1998- Nashville 1999- Atlanta 2000- Minnesota, Columbus -

So 8th overall isn't competitive? 102 pts sucks? Should Chicago, San Jose, Vancouver and Pittsburgh start shipping out their stars too? they lost in the 1st round too. You rebuild when your team can no longer compete, the Wings are a free agent signing and/or a few better playoff match-ups from being championship team again. Datsyuk isn't some run of the mill 33 year old, he's among the best players in the NHL. The closest player in calibre to him that I can remember getting traded was Peter Forsberg (and he wasn't traded by the team he starred with). He returned Scotty Upshall and Ryan Parent, neither of which are still playing with Philadelphia. -

-2 pointsHave you ever played the game? it is all about space and time. Space and time allows you to score. take away space and time and the other time doesn't score. yes we had shots. very few were quality shots. Most where the flip it at the net and hope type. Not quality scoring chances. Yes we spent a ton of time on the PK. That is what happens when you get out skated, which we were. Now all of our stars where out performed. All were healthy. This should be a big giant warning sign to you, and I hope Holland, which I beleive it is. As I quoted before, babcock said it best: "we are going in the wrong direction".
-
-2 points1. I should ask if you or anyone else have played/coached etc...... doesn't belong here or any other forum. It in fact doesn't matter, becasue all we are doing is sharing opinions. If you were offended, I am sorry. 2. Would we like a team with 18 AS on it? yes we would. But would a guy like parise come here to play on the 3rd line? No. Nor would any other top player. Now why did I ask the question? You have to have a deep and balanced roster, I understand that. but you are not going to spend 5 million per year on 3rd line guys. In the SC era, you can't. So we are going to move our young guys that have just started their careers and we hope are our future? maybe. But I would bet good money that the 3rd and 4th lines this fall will be made up of guys on the roster. You can just about name who they are: helm, Abdelkater, Emmerton, maursk, Miller, Cleary (this is a demotion for him), Sheahan, eaves-if healthy, etc..... That is 8 right there. 8 roster spots, so works out nicely. Yes a guy like Jones could come in and help out. We agree on that. But even with him, that is not a major change. That will bring us back to the top 2 lines. In the end this is where the money is, the talent is/was, and the production needs to come from. Tech. all 6 spots are currently filled. Burt, franzen, Z, D, filppula, and Nyquist. I would love to upgrade over Nyquist and Filppula. Nyquist could slide down to the 3rd line, and open a spot. No problem. Now the debate and opinions begin. How do we fill the spot? What moves can be made via trade? Who is going to stand in front of the net? Who is going to make the other teams D pay in the corners? In the end, these are the questions. Keep in mind, the only trade options we have are franzen (no problem if he goes), Filppula-I hope he goes, and Z-last option unless it is a superstar. 3. The D is much easier to figure out. we will add 1 maybe 2 depending on what Lidstrom does. it really is that simple. The only real question is do we go all in on one guy-Suter? Or go for guys like Wideman (Rh shot), Garrison, and carle. Anyone of the 4 would be fine by me.
