Real hockey was played on icebergs by Vikings with axe blades strapped to their feet who just skated around trying to kill each other with the axe handles. Real radio was a wandering minstrel who sang stirring anthems and ribald ballads for a leg of roast mutton.

Hey guys, first off, I apologize if this is in the wrong forum. It's been years since I've posted on the site here....anyway...back in May I did a tour of my grandfathers hockey collection (mainly to show you guys) and I finally got around to uploading it. If you have an hour free, give it a watch. There are a lot of great hockey stories in here. My grandpa has known quite a number of people over the years involved with the game and many of these stories have probably never been heard (except by me and my family 1000 times lol) Most of it is Red Wings related, but I specifically had him point out a few of his non wings stuff for others. Around the 45 minute mark I start asking him questions directly & it can get a little loud because I'm so close to the camera, so just a warning for that. But if you're a fan of hockey history, give this a watch!

I think he makes it. He may be a healthy scratch most nights at first, but Blash seems to really like him. Can't see guys like Andersson staying over Mitch. Gross. Plus there will no doubt be an injury or two by the time the season starts

Yup. It's particularly popular with people who use "girl" as an insult. It's pretty funny when you realize that the anti-analytics crowd is really just anti-information.

Ferraro does everything Andersson does and skates better. Callahan does things Andersson doesn't. Keep them waive the marshmallow

Stadium series Wings vs Avs 2016!

The only thing that interests me in this game is beating Roy one more time. I don't care if happens in an outdoor stadium or in a broom closet.

Pretty desperate for hockey when I find myself refreshing a thread about Mitch Callahan. That being said, Andersson never materialized into what I thought he might be after the 13 playoffs. Cut ties and give the next wave a shot.

Line combos for 97, 98 Cups?

Not even close. McCarty was 3rd in TOI among forwards in the 98 playoffs. Only Yzerman and Fedorov had more ice time as forwards. For a man who loves tough guys, you drastically underrate McCarty's ability as an actual hockey player. His downfall was his lifestyle catching up with him in his later years.

I don't hate Andersson. He's useful(ish) I guess. In the same way that Emmerton was. But he's no more physical, defensively responsible, or speedy than either of Callahan or Ferraro. Additionally, each of them have shown considerably more upside than Andersson offensively. His one big plus is that he can, in a pinch, center a line. But so can Dats, Z, Richards, Sheahan, Helm, Glendening, and Abby or Franzen (in a pinch). Plus we've got a couple real quality centers in GR who could fill in if need be. So Andersson's big plus doesn't really have as much utility as it might otherwise. Andersson's roster spot is not even close to guaranteed. The fact that he had one in the first place has to do with the fact that A) our centers have been banged up for the better part of two years, and B) Babcock's default preference is defensive responsibility over any other skillset when forced to choose (anybody remember Nestrasil making the opening day roster last season lol?).

From the small sample size I saw of Ferraro last year, I really liked the energy he brought to the ice. I never noticed that from Andersson.

Line combos for 97, 98 Cups?

I think you're correct on both. I remember Sandstrom-Yzerman-McCarty line in 1997, and Holmstrom-Yzerman-McCarty in 1998. I remember too in the 1998 Final, Scotty would load up the top line with Shanahan-Yzerman-Fedorov sometimes. But as already mentioned, Scotty would change the line combos every shift.

Datsyuk and Franzem will both likely be out. There is room.
