@Dave_Stubbs: Gretzky has been at Joe Louis Arena for the entire 12-hour visitation of Gordie. There was nothing that would get him out of the building Guy's taking it hard

    Looking ahead at expansion draft

Things can change from now until the expansion draft, but some reputable sources have already discussed the proposed rules. General Fanager added a tool to their site, which includes exempt players and players who meet the 70-game criteria (although, they didn't include the option to protect eight skaters and one goaltender, for some reason) - http://www.generalfanager.com/teams/expansion Here's a breakdown of the reported rules, too: Based on the rules reported to date (from Chris Johnston of Sportsnet and James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail), the following rules apply to what each of the existing 30 NHL teams can protect entering the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft: Players with two years of professional experience or less are exempt from the process. Players with NMCs must be protected, but may be exposed if the player agrees to waive his NMC Teams can protect 7 forwards, 3 defensemen and 1 goaltender Teams must expose 2 forwards and 1 defenseman that play 40 games in the 2016-17 season or 70 games between the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. Players that have already exceeded the 70 game threshold are denoted as 70, players projected to exceed either the 40/70 game thresholds are denoted as 40/70. Teams must expose one goaltender who is either under contract for 2017-18 or an RFA in the 2017 off-season.

Ali was more than the face of Boxing, and to those whom diminish him to just a divisive and controversial figure your speech seems racist. I can't imagine how opressive must have been to have lived as a person of colour back then. Imagine that, Ali (or Cassius Clay as some might prefer to call him) being an Olympic Champion and was still treated as a second-class citizen. Him taking a stand against the system of his era is something only Legends do.

Wow great deal for the Canes

Aww... he does look as sad as can be. Poor guy. Tomorrow is going to really be rough for him, he's going to be one of Gordie's pallbearers. I just have to say, the Detroit Red Wings are without a doubt the most classy, most respectful and simply the best hockey club in the NHL.

I pretty much have the same mindset regarding the whole thing - it doesn't feel like something Holland is going to pull off. That said, Ericsson was 4th in TOI per game among DET defenders for the first half of the season. The second half he dropped to 6th, and was 7th during the last 20ish games or so. I'm not expecting Holland to buy him out, but I wouldn't be completely shocked, either. It's tough to stomach paying a guy playing as your #6-7 defender 4+ million per year.

Honestly, I don't think it's an overpayment - just about everyone on the team had an "off" year. Guys like Shawn Matthias, Lars Eller and Colin Wilson all produced around the same as Riley last season and are making from 2.3-3.9M per. Sheahan was ranked #87 in the entire league last year in lowest cost per point. The deal will give both parties two years to see what kind of player he turns into, and he's still RFA after it's done. It's not a bad signing at all, IMO.

The problem ain't Sheahan. I was hoping Holland would use last year poor performances to his advantage. But it looks like the precedent has been set to where this past season may not matter much in the contract signings. Which means we should expect a lot of players to get some good money. I was hoping Mrazek would get a bridge deal for his poor performance Feb-March, but if that ain't going to count then he'll likely get a pretty nice contract. Which might mean they won't be able to re-sign Helm or go after Stamkos. We will see I guess. I could be wrong.

That'd be very nice. Unlikely, but I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Steal of a deal for sheahan. Hope this guy takes the next step cause he's big, pretty quick and has good hands. When the kid shoots he scores, has an absolute bullet of a shot

living here in Albuquerque, i might actually give vegas a try. having visited a few times, i think it might work out. compare it to a "show" in pricing, it would be one of the cheaper ticket prices in town. my biggest fear about the whole thing is after hours trouble the players can get into. *cough...hudler..cough* a town built on hookers , drinking and gambling will become a hot spot for "girlfriends & addictions" as each team wanders in. imagine probert, visiting vegas 2-4x a year. ahem. tsn can report "corey perry is missing from practice..having a rash looked into." "patrick kane has been arrested for starting a fight with 16 spring breakers from Tennessee" " dustin bufuglien has left the game early in the 3rd period, his tickets for "blue man group" have him seating at 8:30 showing" etc...

I thought it was announced already how the expansion draft would work? Didn't an article come out a few days ago? Players with 2 yrs pro, NHL or ahl would be exempt which means Larkin and Russo that come to mind would be safe but players like mantha, bertuzzi wouldn't Like you said though , we might make some deals this off season and add a dman or someone worth protecting ... I just hope we protect the kids we been developing such as mantha and bertuzzi

I don't think there's any reason to over inflate Smiths value, but there's no value in denying it either. He's a good possession defenseman given the minutes he's getting. Currently, he's no problem for the wings on the third pair. But should you find yourself gushing too much over him remember that Green's possession numbers are almost as good AND he scored way more points. That's what stops Smith from being good instead of situationally good. He hadn't, so far, translated his puck possession skills into active offensive contribution. So he's decent, not nearly as good OR bad as his detractors or proponents suggest. Saying all that, I'd keep him. I think the league is trending toward athletic, puck possession, defensemen. And I think he has value in that regard. But I think ideally he will always be a third pair guy unless he starts producing enough offense to counterbalance his poor defensive zone play.

Yeah man, f*** stats, they're way overrated. Smith sucks because a few fans refuse to accept the fact that he's a completely different player than he was a couple years ago. Every advanced stat indicates that Smith is a top 4 defenseman, but because you say he sucks, it must make it true... I agree that Holland trading for Trouba is very unlikely but I'm still holding out hope, just like I am with several other things on my summer wish list... I'd be okay with Fowler for sure, but that's even more unlikely than Trouba, and I doubt Anaheim would want Howard, certainly not for one of their top defensemen.

I wonder if the venue will have such of Vegas amenities as a Drive-thru chapel or a Fat Elvis impersonator as the hot dog vendor. Rockettes as Ice girls.

Quebec City must be fuming right now. Why would the league expand at all when teams like Florida, Carolina and Arizona can't draw fans to their games?
