It's not retired, let him wear it

I don't care if there's 29 teams begging to take Datsyuk's contract, or only one willing trade partner, Holland should not be giving up a ton to get rid of this contract. It's a completely different story if we're a legit Cup contender, but we aren't, and won't be for another couple years at least. We should be trying to acquire future assets not lose a bunch just to rid ourselves of a contract for one season...

Back off the ledge boys, Bobby Mac to the rescue: "DET will trade contract first, acquiring team will terminate contract, take cap hit. Contract will get terminated, not by DET." Pretty important detail that Shannon left out, not cool.

I'm hoping Holland is able to trade the contract, but at the same time I hope he doesn't cave into fan pressure and overpay to trade it. Unless it stops us from signing a stud, I'm not willing to morgage the future so we can be better for 1 year.

Who wants to bet the trade is already set to go? I bet there will be a deal announced by Tuesday. Let's do this Holland! Your job depends on it! Read the post above yours.

Datsyuk's press conference coming up within the hour with all signs pointing to officially leaving the Detroit Red Wings and the NHL. Thanks for all the memories Dats! You will always be one of my favorite players. It was a privilege watching him in his prime, hanging guys jock straps on the rafters. 953GP 314G | 604A StanleyCup [x2] Lady Byng [x4] Frank J. Ya'll are forgeting that the streak is valuable to this organization. We are losing our #1 center. Holland will do what he can to keep the streak going. And with the way Zetterberg called Holland on his s*** to be aggressive in the off season (twice by the way), I'm pretty sure the general consensus is that they need to move on from being stagnant and make moves to be able to make a deep playoff run. Can they do it with giving the kids more play time? Maybe. Can they do it by adding more pieces? Definitely. Pulk + Jurco + Datsyuk's contract won't be a surprise to me. I know some of ya'll would hate it but something tells me this teams going to do what it can to be different this off season. I think a lot of us are fixated on Stamkos. Freeing up Datsyuk's doesn't just translate into Stamkos. There's a lot of UFAs out there that can make this team better. Stamkos is just a Plan A to the Plan B, C, D and E that could be potentially possible. And even if Plan C is remotely better than having Jurco and Pulkinnen as water boys for another season then so be it.

My question is, why did Tatar have to do more with 'less'?... Do you think it might have to do with the coach trusting Nyquist more? Nyquist seems to be relied on more at the end of games when up or down by a goal. Is there a reason for this? Their production is virtually the same from year to year, and throughout their careers, they're basically the same age, same size, pretty close on the same style of play, the difference is negligible... To say either one is far superior over the other at this stage of their careers is ridiculous. They're both very good secondary skilled wingers...

I agree, and I've said before that I'd be okay with giving up Pulkkinen for a late round draft pick (something has to come back the other way), but anything more is overpayment. And we're not in a situation that we should have to over pay. If it's going to cost more than that, eat the cap hit for a season and play the kids...

If we lose Jurco, Pulkinnen and maybe a third round pick but in doing so we dump Ericsson/Howard & Datsyuk then I'm all for it. Consider it a house cleaning

If this is true it's bulls*** that the Wings would be punished with the cap hit while not being allowed to trade it. Either waive the cap hit or let the team trade it. The Wings are not in the wrong here if Dats wants to go play in Russia.

Maybe, but Richards isn't chopped liver either. He's a two time cup winner and a Conn Smyth winner who put up 90+ points on two occasions in his career. Anways, Holland already said Fedorov's number is in consideration for retirement. You've got to be kidding. They decided to terminate the contract?! And if so, is it because he wants to play in Russia? I'm confused.

Yeah, I'm not on board with Stammer wearing 91 if he comes to Detroit. That's one thing I'm still sentimental about.

    Cap may drop

Am I the only one who wants Stamkos to go anywhere but Toronto? Obviously I think their plan all along was to trade away salary, tank it for the 1st pick, and then go after a guy like Stamkos in his prime. I hope the cap going up either means Tampa re-signs him or the wings can open up their wallets now.

Stamkos would be an incredible game changer for this team. He covers not only a 1C slot that we have open but he's also a goal scorer. Something we haven't had since the days Z, Hossa scored 40 goals in 08 and 09 respectively. Which was also the last time we went to the finals. All in all, I'd say Tampa, Toronto have a better shot at having him followed by Wings and Buffalo.
