I'm proud of Dano. He actually gives a damn and increased our fight count. I just wish he did it to Pavelski or Jumbo Joke. Also, I liked what Hannan did, getting up and retaliating. Our milksop players wouldn't have done that. And Hannan is far from a fighter.

Not only do I log onto LGW at least once per day and have never heard Callahan referred to as Dirty Harry, but LGW isn't meant to cater exclusively to hardcore forum posters. Nicknames are supposed to make it easier to discuss the team, not to prove how funny and clever you are. Making up nicknames that no one else uses is obnoxious and unnecessary. Watch... It looks like Yellow Mustard is going to miss some time after catching that elbow last night against the Sabres. Its really bad timing too, because our defense already thin with Big Poppa out with a concussion and Bandit serving his 5 game suspension. I would say this forces us to call up someone from GR, most likely Billy the Kid or The Player Formerly Known As Steve. We might be in trouble on the back end until we get some regulars back, since this leaves the Boogeyman as our #1 defenseman. And you know what that means!!!! Seasons half way, thoughts?

I don't see us going far in the playoffs, but I sure would like to at least MAKE the playoffs to keep the streak going. We don't want it to look like we can't handle the East after dominating the West for so long. If the playoffs started today, we'd have a Wild Card slot.

A lot of folks have been giving Franzen a hard time over his concussion and I would like to provide my own experience in the hope people can understand that a seemingly innocent 'love tap' can cause a TBI (traumatic brain injury). With all the strides being made on TV about concussions, with so many men who have now committed suicide because they could no longer live in such pain, it hurts me that the Wings community is so callous and shallow in their responses to such a very serious injury. A brain injury is THE MOST SERIOUS injury a player can sustain, and we as the Wings community should be pulling together to give our fallen warriors their support when this happens. And not belittle them and accuse them of malingering or lying. I sustained my first concussion 2 years ago and I've never had any head, neck, back or head injuries in my life (I'm 37, fit, former Marine). I didn't get hit in the head, I fell down, hard. So hard in fact that it caused my head to snap back and I got a concussion. A bad one, it took 6 months before the headaches stopped. 18 months before I didn't have symptoms, but 2 years on I still have some problems. After 6 months I went to see the specialist Crosby saw in Los Angeles when he wasn't getting better because I wasn't getting better, I had all the classic symptoms and they would just not go away. The truth is, doctors can't do anything for a concussion, there is no test, there is no drug, there is really no treatment. When you injure your brain it's a traumatic brain injury and everyone heals different and the only medication is time. When Franzen says he has a problem processing information I feel for the guy. I know what that's like, to barely be able to drive yourself to the doctor, to not be able to watch TV, or even wash dishes because there is too much going on and after a few minutes you have to sit down and collect yourself because you're so exhausted. Or having to take two breaks while walking to get the mail. Or it takes 5 minutes to type a sentance while writing an email. This is so frustrating, there is NOTHING you can do but let it run its course. On the outside one can look strong, fit, and healthy like a mule, but on the inside, the brain is going completely haywire beyond your control. The way Franzen got popped is how many concussions occur, and since this is not his first concussion he is risking serious injury to his long term brain health. (Think Junior Seau) I hope more people will have an open mind when we're talking about a TBI, and do more to help those in need, with understanding and giving people space and time to recover. But to mock the injury in any way, is cruel and you would not want to go through the same pain of any player having to live with the recovery of this injury. I am embarrassed by some of these responses I'm reading here, on line and in the news sections, as a Wings fan, as a man, and as a human being. Thanks for reading.

What is going on in Edmonton?

They're drafting players based on hype and all on the same side of the puck with few exceptions. Absolutely zero veteran leadership, no goaltending to speak of.

This may be unpopular to some for this statement, but Cleary's elbow to Hannon's head last night disgusted me and he should be suspended. After losing Dats and Mule to concussions, this really has no place in the game. Sure those other other guys didn't get suspended, but 2 wrongs don't make it right. It's hard to say suspend one of your own, but I think it needs to be done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoprTBjKoWo

Odd situation here, since Hannan/McLellan won't receive fines for the instigator in the last 5 mins. Do I believe they should be? No. However, I don't like that the NHL basically operates under however they are feeling and ignoring rules that are in place. Either have the rule on the books and enforce it, or take it off the books. I guess the way the rule is written they are allowed to do that, but I still don't like it simply because I don't have to. Heh.

How come when our guys get frustrated and lose their cool now they just end up doing dumb s***. What happened to the Wings of a few years ago? When those guys got frustrated, they came at you hard and physical, but clean, and used the anger as motivation to put up a few points. Now they just either give up, or do stupid s*** and take penalties and dig their hole deeper.

    Mike McKee

Cant say I disagree. Hes got size that most NHL heabyweights nowadays dont. Realistically, how many players in the NHL are even his size? The crazy thing is that hes supposedly a fitness freak and his weight is muscle, not Byfuglien weight. Im glad he went to college so he can develop some skill, his mean streak is always going to be there and hes had plenty experience fighting. He needs to work on his puck skill and skating

    Sheahan called up

Im with you there, they never should have sent Jurco down because at the time he was playing great and providing a much need spark. I hope it doesn't take a few more horrendous games for something to happen though

    Trade with Sabres?

how about just Miller for Howard? This would give both players the chance to play for their home state team. We should sound Miller out about a 2 year deal at the end of his current contract thus giving Mrazek 2 years as back up before taking over the starters role, i just think Kenny overpaid Howard and the deal was to long.

Babcock quote “I’m going to do what I do every night,” Babcock said. “The guys who play the best will get the most (ice time).” So Dan Cleary outplays Tatar and Nyquist ? Tatar scored a goal yesterday, and Cleary did nothing but take a dumb elbowing penalty yet had more ice time. Cleary had the 2nd most minutes last night behind Zetterberg.

    1/9 GDT: Red Wings 1 @ Sharks 4

This game was typical of this season - once again the offense was unable to finish, the defense had several miscues that led to goals against, and the goalie surrendered softies that totally sucked the life out of the team. The WIngs' offense is ranked 22nd in the league (that alone speaks for itself). The team in general seems to be incapable of having a puck possession game. The defense gets lazy and typically forfeits odd man rushes in almost every game (I am specifically getting tired of seeing our d-men literally being out-hustled or floating around aimlessly while in their own zone). Howard has won less than 30% of his games, is barely cracking a 90% save percentage, and averages nearly 3 goals against a game. Quite frankly, Detroit is lucky they are not further down in the standings given the preceding facts (it certainly is good Detroit is no longer in the Western Conference as their win percentage against such teams is a pathetic .375). The real scary thing is management and the head coach seem to have become complacent with certain players (e.g. Dan Cleary). I will never understand the rationale for benching and sending Jordin Tootoo to Grand Rapids when he could easily be replacing Dan Cleary. It will be interesting to see where the Wings are at in the standings and what happens by the trade deadline.

You guys are calling out Howard? Looking at the recap video on NHL, it looked like Howard gave the Wings a chance to get back in there. Sure the 2nd goal he would like to have back, but how about those PP saves, a 2 on 1 save, lack of defensive coverage in his own zone? Then you have Bert miss a wide open net, Tatar as well near the end. The 4th goal was one hell of a shot, not many goalies are going to stop a snipe that close and with so much time to shoot.

Yeah let's ignore how great he played the 20 games before his injury.

Couple of things: 1. Rookie GM stating he would be bold things, well it takes two to make a trade and if he doesn't want to get rid off one of the younger guys for defensive help, there isn't much for him to do. 2. Six Rings Kewin Lowe - if he would really know something about winning (in his position), things would already be better for them. 3. Rookie Coach who doesn't respect tradition, thinks he has to reinvent every wheel 4. maybe the most important thing: they aren't drafting BPAs needwise. Instead of trading down and getting another pick in the process picking another forward with KHL possibilities has was just dumb. Why not go for defensive help and add another nice pick for forward depth? plus they aren't tough enough to play against, Gazdic doesn't get enough icetime for what he brings and waiving Bigmac clearly didn't help their toughness.

A player like Jagr or Alfredsson would have suited them this past offseason. There is also an obvious lack of goaltending in their system that has gone unfixed for too long, and they have had their opportunities. Maybe it's the coaching, maybe it's the management, but Kylee above pretty much summed it up. Edmonton is a mess.

    Pissed off: JJ speaking out

You guys (and Johnson too) are basing all of this off an article that was specifically written to drum up controversy. There are a million things about the selection process that Burnside could have focused on, he chose to include quote after quote about player evals...and almost exclusively negative evals I might add. Narry a mention in there about why a particular player is a stud and exceeding expectations, but lots about why guys aren't. Point is, Richards almost certainly had a lot of good things to say about Johnson. Who wouldn't? Johnson is a good player. But at the end of the day, my guess is that anything good was glossed over because the "Johnson snubbed by Team USA" story was too good to pass up. Same with Burke and Ryan, Burnside conveniently leaves out the part where Burke picks him but definitely leaves in the part where Burke criticizes him.

I think there should be a rule about completely fabricating nicknames for players. I have no idea who Dirty Harry is, and it's annoying that I have to ask.

    Seasons half way, thoughts?

Up and down to be honest. Going into the season I was incredibly optimistic after the end of last year. And then we re-signed cleary……….(just for the record, I have nothing against Danny, but I firmly believed it was time for the wings to part ways with him) That said, I think we've done exceedingly well considering the injuries we've had (as of Jan 5th, 166 man games lost, 7th in the league - source mangameslost.com!!!!). I'm hoping that we'll have a big surge once we can get DeKeyser, Helm, Datsyuk and Franzen back, establish some consistency with our lines and move forward productively. Extremely excited about the form Helm has shown when he came back, some unexpected offence too which is badly needed. I do think that they should possibly bury Samuelsson and bring up Jurco full time, the kid just needs to play. And I truly believe there's a spot for Sheahan on this team also. A couple of big, young bodies will definitely go along way. Glad to see that Nyqvist and especially Tatar are playing well, but they both just need to become a little more consistent and bring it every night. Tootoo needs to be up here permanently IMO, just so we can have a greater bang and crash presence on our 4th line. Only real negatives I can find are the lack of consistency, Cleary been given a constant lineup spot, injuries obviously, non stellar play from Jimmy (although he looks like he's turned a corner now). Otherwise, the east definitely is no where near as strong as the west. I could envision that if we can get on a roll in the second half and start churning out wins, I don't think there's anyone else in the East besides Boston and Pittsburgh that could give us a problem come playoff time. That is of course, if this team starts to play like we expect it to.
