For starters, that writer is an idiot. It wasn't late and he didn't leave his feet before contact. Part of the reason the hit was so vicious is Sobotka was still following through on his shot and couldn't protect himself. People need to stop watching gifs and slow motion replays and actually watch the video at regular speed. I don't know about international standards but by NHL rules the only issue is the strides he took before the hit. That could make it charging. To me it looks like he's hustling back to make a play then veers into the hit, but it gave him a whole lot of momentum and made this hit a nasty one. As for the rest, he does contact the head but he makes solid contact through the body. That's legal in the NHL because of the solid body contact (I don't know about international rules). He doesn't leave his feet before contact. If Sobotka gets up, it's likely nothing happens here. Even if it were in the NHL though, because Sobotka doesn't get up it's likely getting a suspension.

Watching those highlights, I wonder if there is ever a game where Queneville doesn't go berserk and act like a raging old drunk.

Are people not watching these playoffs? Vanek is NOT the answer.

In live action, it looked painful. I thought he'd get a penalty, but was surprised that it was a game until I saw replays (repeatedly). The worst part for the team was that they lost composure once their leader was gone. CR scored twice on that PP, and it wasn't until after the 2nd intermission that the US looked like they had their heads back out of their straps. Once Kronner got the A, he scaled back a bit on his hits (having been injured a lot over the years and just plain getting older might have been a factor there too). With Abby wearing the C, he needed to be more careful. On the other hand, it was up to him to set the bar for the team and lead them, which I think is what he was trying to do. He's no Claude Lemieux. He's just a guy who made an error in judgment. I hope he doesn't get suspended, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Geez what did fans do before when hits like these were very legal and there were no questions.....

An ejection on a hit like that seems to be the commonplace now a days in hockey due to the "soccer mom" attitude that has crept into the game. Why is there no onus put on the player who is being checked for putting himself in an awkward position?

Abby has a tendency to have pretty monumental brain farts from time to time. Not "Brenden Smith trying to Pass" levels of brainfartitis, but bad nonetheless.

I believe if we are getting help at the forward position, it will come via trade. No UFA out there worth outbidding someone for.

What an insult to vanek. He will NEVER be as bad as Franzen. I like vanek as many do but I'm pretty sure no one wants him at 7.5m. Now 5m? yes! 6m with a shorter deal maybe 4 years? Yes. But not 7.5m and long term like he will probably get. I fully expect him to get 6-8m range for 7 years. I like vanek and want him on this team but not for that price. And I HATE long term deals in older guys. Idc who it is any deal thats long term and for guys older than 34 or 35+ is bad. It can't bring anything good. And I have yet to see one case where it has.

Vanek is going to get a ridiculous contract despite the fact that he has 2 seasons of 70+ points in his career and hasn't scored 30 goals since 10-11. He's on the back half of his career and his numbers won't get better. Someone (Philly? Minny?) Will still give him $50 mil over 7 years. I hope Holland laughs at him when he hears that number.

This thread has hit all the major points...an injured hockey player, anti-German sentiment, dinosaurs, and asteroids, back to injured hockey player, and misinterpretation of, and overraction to, a comment. The webernet can shut down now. Glad Ovie's okay, though.

It's hard to tell if he did it on purpose but thats three times now? some of these big guys go down rather easy, while it takes a wrecking ball to move datsyuk lol

Exactly. David Stern (NBA) made $20m last season, and Budd Selig (MLB) earned only marginally less than that. Roger Goodell (NFL) took home upward of $11m.

Because NHL profits as a whole are steadily increasing. Bettman makes relatively little compared to other sports commissioners.
