4 points"Mathfreaks?" Is this a thing now? Cuz, if so, we should start calling Babcock Mr. Mathfreak, since he luvs teh mathz. Also, we should stop using numbers altogether. Goals, assists, PP%, PK%, faceoff %, shots on goal, shots against, scoring chances, blocked shots, turnovers, takeaways, wins-losses-OT, save percentage, GAA, hits... WHAT MATTERS IS FIGHTS. YOU CAN'T MEASURE TOUGHNESS WITH A CALCULATOR. BUT MATHFREAKS DON'T GET THAT. CUZ THEY DON'T ACTUALLY WATCH THE GAMES.

Good job Bettman, the NHL had something great going on and yet in a span of not even 7 years they've managed to absolutely destroy it by: 1. watering it down with the Stadium Series 2. rehashing the same teams again and again 3. matching up two teams that don't have any rivalry nor hatred going on If the NHL is serious about this thing, they better have a Bruins - Habs matchup at Fenwaypark - have the Dropkick Murphys as the opening act - next year. This also just proves what I've always thought the event itself is nothing, if the participating teams don't have a large enough following, rivalry and the conditions aren't there. Wings - Leafs had a record breaking 2,9 Teams that deserve one Wild, Avs (hate to say it but yeah...), Bolts, Habs... http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nhl-winter-classic-earns-lowest-rating-in-game-s-history-160140036.html -

Pens aquire David Perron from Oilers

Why the hell would the Wings want David Perron? You guys are acting like we've lost out on some huge need here. Perron is a good player, but he's not some big, goal scoring, power forward. He's an smallish, offensive, skilled player. We've got so many of those that Stephen Weiss is currently playing on the fourth line. We have ZERO need for David Perron, so lets not cry over spilled milk. -

Perron, given his skill set, would not have been competing for a spot with Franzen and Abby. He would have been competing with Nyquist and Tatar...both of whom are better. Babcock likes a big bodied puck retrieval type guy on each line ideally. So even if we got Perron, he'd still keep Abby and/or Franzen in the top six. Do you honestly think Mike Babcock would put Perron on one wing and Tatar or Nyquist on the other? Keep dreaming dude. I get that you've got a lot wrapped up in this "Holland is stupid and lazy" thing, but he shouldn't pursue EVERY available player just because he could, theoretically, beat the best offer. If it doesn't address a need then he shouldn't do it. And Perron doesn't address a need. I'd be with you if it were a good puck mover, or a big forward. But what does Perron do that Tatar, Nyquist, and Weiss don't do better? And like I said, given Babs' preferences, those are the guys he'd be competing with for a spot in the top six. Not Helm, Abby, or Franzen. -

This is the issue I found with Drouin last year as well. He played with Mantha but a lot of the times he skated around trying to do everything himself. Mantha finished the tournament with the highest scoring despite it, but it really screwed Canada later in the rounds especially Finland. -
1 pointThose are the kinds of goals I want to see him scoring. I'm glad when he gets on the score board cleaning up trash in front of the crease, but I want to see him developing his shot at the pro level. Any big body can bang in a rebound, but a big body that can bang in rebounds AND pick the corners is lethal. Just ask Rick Nash and Jeff Carter.

Why does everybody always say that Crosby needs a winger? Chris Kunitz is really good. He was a 20+ goal a year player BEFORE playing with Crosby, and he's consistently been one after playing with Crosby. Did people think when he got put on a line with Crosby that he'd score 50? And is that what Pittsburgh needs in order to win? Because having two 90-100 point players and a bunch of guys that can score 15-25 goals ought to be enough...if your defense and goalie arent' terrible anyway. -

1 pointI was going to put this in the "Nashville has yet to lose 2 games in a row this season" thread, but I started going off on a tangent so here seemed more appropriate... Nashville are the only team to not lose two games in a row this season, but Nashville AND Detroit are the only two teams that have not lost two games in a row in regulation this season. I think the Wings have been pretty consistent this season. Sure, their goal scoring has seen it's ups and downs but the same goes for every team. The key is, when their goal scoring has gone through it's dry spells, they have managed to keep the opposition in check, lowering their goals against. In saying that though, I do believe that Detroit are much better off trying to win games 4-3, 4-2 as opposed to 2-1, 1-0. Unlike past years, this team is capable of scoring at a higher clip, but for whatever reason, Babcock would rather play defensive hockey over offensive hockey, which clearly is not the teams strong suit... I do think Babcock is a great coach, but I think a lot (maybe all) fans get frustrated with his line combinations, ice time distribution, constant coddling of certain players, while other (better) players remain in his dog house (for reasons unexplained...). I hate when people say things like, "Detroit are lucky they're getting all these "loser points", otherwise they wouldn't be in the playoff picture". No, not at all. This "loser point" as it is so often referred, is the same thing as a point for a tie, the extra point that is handed out to the "winner" is the one that should get the negative connotation in my opinion. These teams that are racking up points in the shootout are the "lucky" ones, and the "bulls*** winner in a shootout point" needs to go in my opinion. Teams shouldn't be able to make the playoffs based on a skills competition. The Red Wings are 1-7 in the shootout, while the Islanders are 6-1. If the Red Wings had a reversed record and 6 more points, they would be first in the league with 55 points, whereas, if the Islanders had a reversed record and 5 less points, they would be a borderline playoff team instead of being tied for second in the Conference. I hate using "what ifs" but that is a pretty remarkable difference, based on an aspect of the game that should be done away with, in a lot of fans opinions... Anyway, is this team a contender? I think they are a couple pieces away from being a true contender. I just hope Holland makes the necessary moves, without mortgaging the future. The pieces are definitely there, but let's just hope he doesn't move any of the "untouchables"...
