Nyquist Files For Arbitration
13dangledangle and 10 others reacted to haroldsnepsts for a post in a topic
It's amazing how fast people will turn on a player. If memory serves, this is more of a basic procedural thing than a real indication that things are going poorly. By filing for arbitration Nyquist forfeits the right to accept an offer sheet from other teams. In other words, he's committing to the Wings by filing. Today is the deadline to file so the timing is likely a result of that, not something that happened with the Wings. I'm pretty sure this is something players do that's just a backup plan for a worst case scenario. And again, by doing so he cannot accept an offer sheet from another team. -

The mistake many making here is assuming that this case even gets before an arbitrator. Neither side wants that, no player wants to hear his employer explain all his shortcomings in an effort to cut his salary. Nyquist has excellent regular season production but he'd be roasted on his awful playoff numbers to this point. Still I think he'd get a better offer by going to arbitration than what I think he's going to sign before it gets there. I expect him to take a deal in the 3.75 to 4.25 million range, similar to Kadri's but perhaps a little longer. -

I love how you list their weights as if it's part of the negotiating process... No way, Nyquist gets close to what you're suggesting. I'm willing to bet he gets a very fair contract, nothing close to what Saad is getting in Columbus... -

Lol at people saying 3 or 3.5 million, no way he gets anything under 4.5. Back to back near 30 goal seasons and back to back to back seasons of being one of the teams top scorers he's well worth 4.5+. We're lucky he's an RFA and not a UFA because there are teams out there that would offer 5+ easy. Everyone in this thread has come to accustomed to Kenny and his lowball "market value" offers, fact is good players get paid and Goose is a good player. Saad, age 22, 23G 29A 52 PTS - 6M O'Rielly, age 24, 17G 38A 55 PTS - 7.5M Kadri, age 24, 18G 21A 39 PTS - 4.1M Nyquist, age 25 27G 27A 54 PTS- ??? O'Rielly and Saad being comparable to Gooses productivity and Kadri being slightly below Gooses productivity (Kadri's never scored more than 20) it's easy to say goose is a 4.5M+ player. If you had to go to Free Agency to replace Gooses productivity it's going to cost 5 Million plus for a near 30 goal 50+ points scorer. -

4.6-5.2m for 4-6 years. -
1 pointI don't think anyone around here believes Saad is worth $6M. The Wings are normally pretty generous with RFAs, but we haven't really had any that have put up the numbers Nyquist has either, and now it seems RFAs are getting UFA money. I'm still going with around $4.5M, since that's what we can afford without moving anyone. Might have to go short-term to get that. If we do that and he keeps up his production, we could be looking at $7M+ in a couple years. I think I'd rather go higher and get a better term.

That's the point the are restricted free agent for a reason. You don't get to be unrestricted until 27, so why would you get unrestricted money before then? -

I was just explaining the arbitration process to a non-hockey fan the other day and part of my explanation was how people panic and then someone (usually a guy named Harold) steps in and reminds people that it means that the player is forfeiting offer sheets and not to panic. I got the strangest look. I think Gus will go somewhere in the 3-3.5 for 3 years range. He had the hot start to the year last season that got people buzzing, but then he cooled off. We know he has the potential, but he still has to prove that he can be consistent. Hot and cold streaks happen, but consistency over all is as valuable as talent. -
1 pointWell, you have to look at this way Frank. It isn't a similar situation. AT ALL! Goose files because he wants to stay, doesn't want to be offer sheeted because he's going to negotiate with the Wings in good faith... and would you look at that the Wings want him to stay, don't intent to screw him over dollar-wise. Saad and Chicago were not close on making a deal so they traded him. While this was unexpected, you knew something was going to give and Chicago. So it did. So, Columbus while not giving up a kings ransom for Saad... HEY! They'd sure like to keep him and not lose him to an offer sheet... so they went probably higher than needed with both dollar and term and Saad accepted. So while they might be comparable in stats for this year... and because I'm nice I'll point out that they had similar years last year as well, but I'm still going to maintain based on my thoughts above and below that... It's not really the same thing at all. ...and as you have so kindly pointed out TWICE... Saad is younger (therefore broke into the NHL at an earlier age than Nyquist/etc) and has ALREADY helped a team win two cups... Goose is OLDER and helped no team win ZERO cups. . No cups, No CA$H.* *(Not always true, but there's always some moron GM trying to save his job that'll throw a horrible contract at SOMEONE!) There's no reason to think Goose is going to demand outlandish term or dollars on this contract to stay on a team that brought him into the league, that he wants to play for, and to play for a coach that loves the s*** out of him.

Yeah, I think a few years back there was a conception that arbitration equals player, agent, and GM are butting heads and it's a power play, but I think I recall Holland saying its a routine process and it's for the best for all groups because it kind of encourages both sides to prioritize getting a deal done instead of putting it off. I tried looking for the exact quote but if I'm not making it all up then it was from a few years ago I think... Maybe someone else remembers this? -

Voynov pleads "No Contest" to Domestic Violence Charge
chaps80 reacted to Bannedforlife for a post in a topic
You're talking out of your ass.First of all, since he'll be serving time in jail, not prison, there is no such thing as minimum or maximum security. There's just jail. It's the same for everybody. And LA County's main facility, the Twin Towers, is no joke. Unless he PC's up, he'll be spending his 90 days in a 80 man cell full of gang bangers, drug addicts, and murders awaiting trial. Speaking of those 90 days, since his crime is violent in nature he would be ineligible for any sort of work release program, house arrest or anything of the sort. I'm not certain, but I don't even think he is going to get credit for good behavior. I'd be willing to bet good money that he'll be serving the full 90 days in one of the worst facilities in the nation. This isn't the 80's or something bro. His lawyer might have gotten him the most favorable outcome possible, but California's DOC takes violent and domestic abuse sentences VERY seriously, and his semi-celebrity status will not buy him any sort of preferential treatment out here. -

This article suggests Keith Yandle being traded out of new york.... wonder what it would take to acquire him? His cap hit is extremely cap friendly due to the coyotes keeping half of it but he's a free agent after next season. http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/top-10-trade-candidates-at-the-2015-nhl-draft/ -
1 pointYeah, NYI and St. Louis were real all star teams when he played there. Still solid numbers, first year in NYI they made the playoffs for the first time in years. Saved the Wings asses during the 2008 cup run as well, and was instrumental in them making the Finals the following year. Some people will just never give the guy the credit he deserves because he played on some great Wings teams. Oh well.
