The guy is out there having fun with his old teammates. I don't think anyone has any real plans of signing him and I'm sure Cleary is aware of that.

What I dont understand is you constantly talk about AA and Mantha being held down by Helm, but if anything the signing that is holding those two down (if they do in in fact get held down) would be Vanek, who ironically you love the signing of. Yes I know Vanek is one year and Helm is 5 years, but in the context of players being held down this upcoming season, long term is a moot point. Vanek is the one taking minutes away from those two in a top 6 position while Helm will ideally be playing third line. If that plays out, Helm will likely be an upper end third liner, while Vanek will likely be a top 6 disappointment.

Also can we please, PLEASE, stop forcing every big guy to be a "net front presence"? From Khan's "Mantha" article: "Last year was a good first year for me to do net-front. It could be a good advantage for me, being 6-4, 6-5." This kid is a skilled shooter. I don't care that he's big. You're taking his best weapon (shot) away from him by sticking him in the crease. Let unskilled guys bang in rebounds. You don't see Rick Nash, Blake Wheeler, or James Neal standing in front of the net on the PP just because they're big.

Having him keeps guys from playing back to back pre season games during the world cup, nothing more

I fully support Dan Cleary in his aspirations and wish him the very best of luck with making the team. To me it's quite simple: if he makes the team on performance, he belongs. Now skate like the wind Danny boy!

Loyalty to someone like Cleary, does make a difference to other players that sign here.. Maybe small but it counts as a class act team that will take care of its players.. Give him a shot at an NHL contract somewhere or end up in the minors again (most likely the case)

Hes lived in the area during the offseason forever. Pretty sure his wife is from Michigan and that and him playing at MSU kept him around. The more good hockey minds in the organization the better. He was never a star but he put up some pretty respectable numbers in the mid to late 00's so he knows the game.

Horcoff has lived in Detroit forever and trains in Detroit before the season every year. Surprised he got a role with the Wings, but I guess he was tigher with Kenny than I thought. Him and Dano are buddies too, hopefully this will make Dano finally realize its time to give up with the playing career.
