I hope Holland stays out of the free agent frenzy today, but if he HAS to sign a player, I'd like it to be a young reclamation project, rather than an old, washed up vet. People have already mentioned Yakupov and Grigorenko, but what about Ryan Murphy? He hasn't done much at the NHL level, and was just bought out by the Canes. He's still young and could be a low risk, high reward signing. He may not be any better than anything we currently have, but if that's the case, we can just waive him. I'd offer any of these guys a one year, "show me" contract. Sure as hell beats signing one of the rumored vets to a multi year contract...

If Holland does move on, the new hire needs to come from outside the organization. Promoting Martin or Draper wouldn't change a thing. We need a fresh perspective, someone that isn't afraid to shake things up.

I've heard this notion quite a few times lately, but I can't understand this mind set. Why waste the roster spot on a free agent veteran for the next three years when we could use that spot developing one of our young players? If he's taking one of Kronwall or Ericsson's spot in the lineup, fine, but he shouldn't be taking the spot of Sproul now, or Hicketts or Cholowski in a year or two.

I was in the process of posting something like this yesterday when my tablet died. If we don't I worry we'll turn into the Oilers of the late 90 through the early 2010's... a collection of glory days guys running the show with few results. (Othe than that one improbable run to the finals)

Look at the market at the time. This was not a great contract when it was signed, but it was well within the "going-rate" for a defenseman like Ericcson. So you've resigned yourself to being unhappy for quite a while then, eh? There's no way that Steve Y is coming back to Detroit anytime soon. In the same way that folks are making the case for Holland wanting to stick around until he wins another championship, it's likely that Yzerman will not be walking away from what he's building in Tampa. So, taking my feelings and 'wants' out of the equation... I'll answer the poll this way: Will Ken Holland's contract be extended by Chris and Marian Illitch? If they are smart. No.

I say we switch McIlrath to wing and form a 4th line of McKee - Tangradi - McIlrath...

Abdelkader kills penalties, fights, throws the most amount of hits on the team. Tatar fights so much and the penalty killing he does is almost Datsyukian level. And don't get me started on the hits he throws. $5.5 million is overpaying. Should be getting Nyquist money nothing more. Nyquist scored 25+ goals two seasons in a row and still got under $5 million from Holland.

Khan says it like it's a fact: "They lost center prospect Tomas Nosek to the Vegas Golden Knights in the expansion draft and elected not to re-sign veteran winger Drew Miller. They will add a defenseman and need two more forwards even after Tatar and Athanasiou are in the fold." http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2017/06/detroit_red_wings_hoping_to_si_1.html Hope one of the forwards is Bertuzzi and the other is one the low risk/high reward type: Grigorenko/Yakupov.

Agreed, and this is why I think he doesn't walk away. He walks away today and the narrative for Holland becomes "Some say one the greatest GM's of all time, Some say he was in the right place at the right time" He wins another championship with this current team in the next 5 years doing things his way and not listening to fans and media, and the narrative becomes "The greatest GM of all time". Ego definitely will play a factor. These past few years have definitely hurt his legacy.

Signing Daley to anything other than a 1 year deal is yet another in the long list of Holland blunders.

I'd rather have McIlrath on the wing. I don't like D who can't do much more than punch Sent from my LGLS676 using Tapatalk

When he signed that deal he was fairly young and was looking like a solid player. Then he got hurt and started playing like he was afraid of injury. Sent from my LGLS676 using Tapatalk

Even if he moves up, does anyone believe he won't have a big role in day to day operations? Martin and/or Draper will be getting their marching orders from Uncle Kenny. Sent from my LGLS676 using Tapatalk

    The person below me game...

I have not. I'm not a fan of tea. I have watched the Facts. video where they try it. The person below me has a crafting hobby and will now tell us about it. (If you know anything about people with crafting hobbies, you know the last part of that sentence was unnecessary.)

He's the guy who injured Mantha in that fight towards the end of the season. I love fights, and tough players but we just signed Dylan McIlrath who would serve the exact same purpose if need be so I hope we don't sign Witkowski.

Great, Mich kid. Good size. Right handed. Those are good things. Good deal. Nothing wrong with this. Very good.

We need an entire overhaul upstairs. We don't need any of his assts. taking over with the same philosophy. We need an entire new coaching staff, and have about 6-8 players sold off for whatever we can get. I guarantee we can get 6 and 7th round picks for all the players mentioned above in a fire sale. I don't care really. Of those players mentioned, I'd keep DD and Sheahan though. I would start by asking them to submit their list of teams in their clause and then contact those teams and take low picks just to get rid of them.

Not if Holland is going to screw the pooch with his top 10 picks though. I agree though, this team needs a rebuild not a retool, and that starts by dumping all the salary we can, even if its for 7th round picks....E, Nyquist, Helm, Howard, etc...we need to open up about $20M in cap and be one of those team that needs to meet the cap floor. Then we can maybe outbid some teams for a REAL upgrade to out team.
