So Lamoriello is Toronto GM with an agreement that he'll step away from Toronto to make way for Dubas when the timing is right. Apparently that right timing coincides with exactly the same time Toronto/Mississauga native, elite center, Johan Tavares is set to leaves the Islanders via FA. Lou then becomes GM of the Islanders John Tavares then signs with Toronto Lou then trades with Toronto to get an overpaid Matt Martin, giving Toronto cap relief. I'm not saying there's a conspiracy going on and Lou is a double agent, but I also don't trust Italians who've spent that much time in New Jersey...

Parity is a lie. Eliminate the salary cap. I demand a lockout.

There's no way a team gets Karlsson without giving up their 2019 first round pick. They're going to want to replenish the pick they lost in the Duchene deal. We're not going to get him with a 2019 2nd, 2020 first, and a couple spare parts. It would likely cost us come combination of 2019 1st, 2019 2nd / 2020 1st, Larkin / Mantha, Hronek. That's way too much to give up for a 28 year old defenseman, for a team that is rebuilding and likely 3+ years away, even if he is signed for 9 years. I agree with those saying that Trouba would be a much more realistic option. He's 4 years younger, and would cost much less. I personally want no part of the Karlsson sweepstakes, and am glad to hear Kenny doesn't either. If he hits free agency, sure, go all in. But trade? No thanks.

Yeah, I was expecting more along the lines of $4-4.5M over two years. I don't hate it, but Athanasiou definitely has a lot to prove...
  5. 2 points
Well we only have approximately $4.5M in cap space remaining (not including Franzen on IR) to sign Larkin and Mantha... There has to be a trade in the works... Doesn't there?

    Vanek Signs 1yr. $3M

I think after the first season with Vanek, the team realized we can totally just replace Tatar or Nyquist with this guy for cheaper

Whats everyone take on Maroon? Personally, I don't want another vet taking up the roster space.

He should get 20 goals, 40 points, so I dont hate it. Most 40 point guys get 4+. He is young so he could still hit his potential and get 50-60 points, obviously that's not likely, but it would be nice if he took that next step.

Hopefully it's a sign that Kenny likes what he's seeing from Athanasiou during the off season. As it stands, I'm a little surprised.

The dumbest GM in the league has just lost his number one defenseman for what could be half of the upcoming season... We also have a number one defenseman (Jonathan Ericsson) on a great contract... We could trade Ericsson to Montreal to replace Weber at a very reasonable price. I'm thinking a 2019 2nd round pick should get it done...

Official 2018 Off Season *Rebuild* Thread

The Sens are thinking they can get FIVE QUALITY assets for him NOW. ...teams should just wait. As things slowly creep towards Karlsson walking for nothing in return, those prices are going to go down. Sharply.

Possible deal for Trouba still? I'd love to get Karlsson, but the price is probabl WAY too much, plus I don't think Holland has the cap to take on the Ryan contract. I think it would cost less (still expensive though) to acquire Trouba. Re-signing him would be a snap, being that he is from here. Honestly, looking at the two, even though Karlsson has the Norris and pedigree, I think it would be more beneficial for the Wings to pursue Trouba. If Trouba becomes a tough re-sign again in The 'Peg, wonder what the asking price would be? I've stated before that acquiring Trouba, plus all the higher end talent we have drafted up front could very well allow us to give up a 2020 1st in a package without missing a beat in our rebuild. I'd even be ok with it being a NON lottery protected 1st. Would you do AA, Helm, 2020 1st, 2019 2nd for Trouba? Or would it cost a bit more in NHL players? Would you replace the 2nd with Cholowski or Hronek? What does Winnipeg need? If they are trading Trouba, they may need a young D prospect, and I am sure they'd love AA on a line with Laine. re: Zadina IMO he (and Ras) have to be on this team in the fall. We need to make a deal or two in order to make that happen. As mentioned Frk would probably be the first casualty, but then who next? Do you revisit the Glenny to Toronto deal? Does a 5th round sound too low now if it meant having Zadina and Ras on the team? Babcock loves him so Glenny. Or do you go a different route and try to deal Nyquist? I believe if they do deal him, it'll be at the TDL for a nice return like Tatar's haul we received. Nielsen now has a M-NTC that includes a 10 team no-trade list. Would The Isles be interested in re-acquiring him? They have plenty of cap room, and are in need of a center now. He's no Tavares, but he is a bit better than Filppula. I doubt he gets traded though. Bottom line is we need to have Zadina and Ras (at least) on this team this fall. I'd also love to have Veleno there, but I don't think he will be. So we really need to open up 2 roster spots up front (you can pretty much count on Frk getting waived) for this to happen. Somehow, someway... It would be an injustice for either of those two to go back to juniors. If we waived Frk and dealt Glenny, I'd love to see something along the lines of this: AA - Larkin - Zadina Nyquist - Zetterberg - Mantha Ras - Nielsen - Vanek Abby - Helm - Bertuzzi (some players interchangeable of course) (this is not reflecting a Trouba trade, if we acquired Trouba, we probably could open up 3 roster spots up front. Problem solved.)

Yeah, pretty much my thoughts exactly. I was a huge Faulk fan a few years ago, still am, but I don't think it's the ideal move for us right now. If we're trading with Carolina, I'd prefer to go after Bean. He would likely be a fair bit cheaper, under team control, doesn't hit restricted free agency for another 3 seasons, and would likely re-sign at a reasonable cap hit, and is right in that age group with the rest of our young core. He may not ever become as good as Faulk (I think he will), but we wouldn't be paying the high price either.

    Vanek Signs 1yr. $3M

Yes, Witkowski sucks, but he's the perfect 13th/14th forward. You need someone filling that role and we don't want a Zadina or Svechnikov sitting games and Glendening, Helm or Abdelkader aren't going to sit any games. We just need to hope Witkowski plays as little as possible...

Can he retire in the next American election year? So like 2020. I want at least one leader to be liked by the overwhelming majority.

Because it's the natural cycle of every team in a league with a salary cap. We were a perennial playoff / Stanley Cup contender for over two decades. Because of that we never had an opportunity to draft high enough to get any truly elite talent. We lucked out with some gems, but that's becoming more and more rare in the modern NHL, due to better scouting, covering the entire map, rather than just North America. I can't believe some fans are so irrational to be upset about a rebuild after decades of success. Especially a fan in his 40's. I could somewhat understand if you were a kid, and success is all you've ever known, but you lived through the "Dead Wings" era. You should have a better understanding and patience with a rebuild. Holland has done a fantastic job so far, adding picks and building through the draft. It's not going to happen over night, but we're well on our way. This was a huge draft for us. We're pretty much set up front (other than adding some right-handed snipers). We have a lot of high end goalie prospects. We just need to add some high end defensive prospects. We didn't do that in this draft, which is kind of disappointing, but Holland absolutely made the right picks. The only thing I can think of that Holland could have done in this draft that he didn't do, is trade up into the top 10 when Bouchard slipped. I also think Holland likely tried to do that though, but the price was too high. Which is fine. Coming out of this draft with four 1st round ranked prospects is HUGE! This rebuild isn't over yet, so those that don't understand the process, it's going to be a long torturous few years. I'm actually enjoying the rebuilding phase more than I ever thought I would. It's fun to see the influx of young, skilled players coming through the draft, rather than signing / trading for old sloppy seconds from other teams...
