No Suspension for Quincey's Hit on Getzlaf
roboturner and one other reacted to luvmnger for a post in a topic
i personally think getzlaf tried to embellish the hit and caught his toe in a rut. quincy looked like he gave a "bounce off" push to him, getz went for the duck (no pun) and added on to the impact. once he realized (split second) he was going in awkward...it was too late. face....meet wall. but thats just me. look at quincey's reaction....he couldnt believe that getz went down so....funny. -

Engelland suspended 5 games for Abby hit
Hockeymom1960 and one other reacted to puckloo39 for a post in a topic
I am shocked that Engelland got anything at all. It was Abby's fault for getting in the way, apparently.... but whatever. -

Can Detroit turn things around?
Motown4013 and one other reacted to 55fan for a post in a topic
Can Detroit turn things around? We can and we will. We will find what things need turning. We will find a way to grasp them. We will agree on a common direction in which to turn these things. We will lift as one and turn these things in unison. Then Cleary will fall down, Sammy will overshoot the target destination, every player that hasn't been the blank in a "Bench Blank!" thread will be injured from the lopsided weight distribution, and LGW will have a debate on the effect an enforcer would have had on the things. April will come, the injuries will have healed, the GR kids who have earned the ice time will get it, and we'll head into the playoffs to meet our fate, whatever it may be. We'll look back and marvel at the things that we turned once we got over our injuries, felt the pressure of looking at the playoff picture on the bubble, and focused on winning. Can we turn things around? You bet your sweet bippy, we can. And a Zetterberg will lead them all. -

I really hope Kenny finds a way to get rid of Sammy. The further the season goes along, the less he'd cost a team (especially if we retain salary) He can only submit a list of teams he wouldn't go to, so theoretically a deal could be made. Here's hoping -

Blues Re-sign Steen 3 Years 17.4m
MabusIncarnate reacted to dobbles for a post in a topic
its not about comparing the two as players. clarkson signed a contract coming off a career year he was unlikely to repeat. he got inflated value meaning the contract has a high probability of hurting the team. the steen contract appears to be the same scenario. we see it all the time with guys having big years before signing a contract. recognizing these scenarios and not overpaying is key to being a good gm and putting together a good team. buy low, sell high, right? with the new cba, max contract is 7 for FA and 8 for re-signing a player, correct? either way, 3 years is still very short compared to what we normally see. perhaps its the first sign that gm's are finally going to have to be smart now that the cba closed so many of the loopholes that allowed bad contracts to disappear? -
1 pointI didn't see a suspension for this. Like someone else mentioned, Getzlaf threw himself into the boards.

Tom Wilson Hit on Brayden Schenn
Son of a Wing reacted to Z Winged Dangler for a post in a topic
My thoughts exactly. I've said the same thing a million times. Players need to take hits properly and quit turning like that. Kronwall turned and got killed, Getzlaf tried to turn last night and Quincey wrecked his face from behind and now Schenn gets destroyed. That was definitely charging, but it's on the guy that gets hit to take it and soften the blow. And if that was me and buddy that's 6'4 charges at me and accelerates through his hit, I'd submarine that prick and thumb his eye while he collects his knee caps. Looks like Kronwallings... -

Blues Re-sign Steen 3 Years 17.4m
F.Michael reacted to MabusIncarnate for a post in a topic
Way too much money for Steen imo. He's a solid player but he's playing out of his mind right now, and I find it hard to believe he can even come close to a repeat season like the one he is having. He's worthy of $3.5 - $4.0 max but close to 6 mil per is nuts. Clarkson is a perfect example, had an out of character season last year, got overpaid, and he's back to being his mediocre self with 6 points in 24 games and coming off his 2nd suspension this season already. -

Engelland suspended 5 games for Abby hit
esteef reacted to sleepwalker for a post in a topic
Gotta love the special treatment the Pens always get since they are the league darlings. Thornton, a first time offender gets an absurd 15 games for a gloved love tap, while the Pens players never seem to get more than 5 games, despite the fact they are repeat offenders for dirty HEAD shots, the thing the league always claims they want to get rid of... -

Sammy out, Tootoo in. Anyone on here got any complaints? Didn't think so. Should provide energy, and should be motivated to show what he's got in the next couple games. (Real glad he's gonna play vs the Leafs) -

1 pointYou should use some of that high school logic you seem to be so full of and reevaluate my post, as well as your own OP. I don't care if Lapierre took liberties before, during, or after Downey's response, and based on your premise that an enforcer's presence prevents injuries, you shouldn't either. You asked us all a question in the title of this thread, "Why the Red Wings get injured." You immediately follow that up in the first sentence of your OP with "Because they have no legitimate enforcer." Your argument can then be summed up as 'enforcers prevent injury'. High school reasoning. You also said in your OP that "If there were enforcers, teams would think twice before laying the hits on star players." Again, that reinforces your assertion that the presence of an enforcer would prevent injuries to Red Wings. Downey was dressed and actively used during the game when Lapierre hit and injured Lidstrom; ie Downey the enforcer was present. Based on that example (one which you actually brought forth to the discussion), it is clear that your argument that an enforcer's presence prevents injury is effectively refuted. Downey was present. Lidstrom still got injured. As for the fight providing momentum and sending a message to the Avs, again I invite you to reread your original post as well as mine. We aren't discussing momentum-shifts or message sending. I never mentioned it. Your OP never mentioned it. That is not the topic of this thread, and if you were interested in discussing that as the premise of your argument, you should have made that clear in your OP. I expect better from someone who is so competent in high-school level logic to bring up irrelevant points to the subject as a response to my retort. It's as Kip mentioned in the first page: you keep changing your tune. Now, if you want to discuss whether the utilization of an enforcer shifts momentum or sends messages to the opposition, you're more than welcome to make a separate thread on those topics, assuming LGW can stomach yet another enforcer thread. But whatever you do, don't bog this already shallow thread down with multiple topics of discussion. Lets stick with injury prevention.

1 pointI'd rather see Franzen knee someone in the head, then throw a fit when someone touches glove to his face. Do enforcers prevent injuries? No, but they prevent reoccurring instances where the entire team gets bullied, thus leading to injuries. Enforcers are the street justice of the hockey world. The "police" (refs) aren't doing an adequate job for the most part in supporting player safety, so that's where the thugs come in. Is it really that hard to acquire someone that can fight AND play hockey? Probably not.. Edit: Having players with multiple roles seems to be non existent.

1 pointAhem. Let us quote the book of "kickazz", chapter 7, post 140... Yes, I can see how one might confuse "hits" with "fights" when you yourself said the lack of an enforcer was to blame for our injuries. But to go back to the stats... Matt Martin (LW, NYI, 6'3" 206lbs) far and away leads the NHL in hits, at 165. Yet the Islanders sit at 86 games lost to injury. If, by your argument, big hitters translate in fewer injuries, why are the Islanders right around the NHL average in games lost? Or Tampa Bay, at 123 games lost, when they have Radko Gudas' 112 hits? Or Toronto, at 97 games lost, when they have Cody Franson's 110 hits? At best, the teams that have some of the league leaders in hits are among the NHL average in games lost. It still appears that the numbers aren't backing you up.
