    Trade Deadline Prediction Time

No. But we'll definitely kick some tires.

No offense, Flashy, because you're a good dude who makes kickass GDTs - but I'm an immature, impatient, impetuous Wings fan and I grow weary of "Let's wait until next season, because..." There will always be high-quality players available at the deadline, true - but there will also always be reasons, excuses, rationalizations as to why we shouldn't do anything. We have to improve significantly if we want to win one more Cup with Datsyuk and Zetterberg. I'm high on our young guns and Griffins, but Ouellet, Sproul, Pulkkinen, Jarnkrok - they're all at least one more season away. And even then, they'll only be rookies. (Brendan Smith is a reminder that being a very good defenseman in the NHL is very, very, very hard.) Meanwhile, our core will be that much older and probably less effective. Free agency sucks. We know the script: most of the top guys will re-sign, and the ones who don't will be looking to Get Paid and therefore won't be coming to Motown, because we're generally averse to bidding wars these days. We can't realistically expect a Daniel Alfredsson to fall into our collective lap every summer. (Collective Lap. Add that to the band name list.) Even Weiss was sort of a stroke of luck, as he was very keen on becoming a Wing. And, given Weiss's monumental struggles, I fear Kenny's never going to take a chance on a high-end free agent again. The only other option? Trade. I feel like maybe the stars are aligning for us here on the trade front. The cap room we'd need? Suddenly we have it. The attractive young roster players we'd need? Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan, Jurco. Potentially high (and therefore quite valuable) first-round pick? Yep. And, of course, a wealth of promising prospects. (In Mantha - who may be having his first and last this-kid-is-just-plain-better-than-everyone-else season - we have, for the first time in a long time, a prospect that any and every GM in the league would probably love to have.) I'm not saying we should sell the farm, our future. I'm not saying we should be in on high-priced rentals like Vanek. I'm not saying we're a contender who just needs one big trade to put us over the top. I'm not saying we absolutely must make a big trade. I'm saying...Why not now? Why not do something this season? I feel we're in a position to make a significant move. I don't know that such a move is there to be made, but I've always believed that the possibilities are never limited to the rumors. Nearly any player can be had for the right price; a smart, creative, wily GM might make things happen. Easy for me to say, of course. But it's also easy to do nothing. /rant

Stephen Weiss will be our trade deadline acquisition. Sorry had to 😄

I'd like to add: our first-round pick should be in play. Or, if not in play, then at least "possibly available." If what I'm hearing is true and Kenny's categorically refusing to even consider moving our 1st...that's immensely stupid. We're not the Sabres. We're not rebuilding. We're retooling (there's a difference), and we're doing so with a relatively deep prospect pool which has already given us Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan, and Jurco. And DeKeyser would've gone in the first round had he been drafted, so he's basically a free first-round pick.

I think a team would be stupid to give a 1st for Vanek without it being a conditional pick. In the end, Holland won't go for a rental. Wings landing Vanek would hinder on him singing long term. But it's already well known he wants to test the market. If he wants to play here, he'd come here this summer. No point giving up assets for him now.

Montreal, Toronto, Tampa, Rangers, Philly, Washington, Columbus, Ottawa. These are all very beatable teams, even with our current roster. Boston and Pittsburgh are the 2 teams to worry about. If we can avoid those 2 teams in the first round, The Wings can make some noise. A couple moves and the return of Hank, and we can beat the Bruins or Pens as well. We can't worry about the favorites out west here. Only one of them can make the finals, and in the finals anything can happen. The east is weak, and anything can happen. I think this team is closer to being a contender than a lot of people think.

I'm shocked nobody came up with Little Ceasars Palace yet.

    Naming the New Arena

Maybe if we all chip in they can call it letsgowings.com arena. Instead of a statue of Howe or Yzerman they can rotate monthly a statue of which ever Wing we hate at the moment for vandalism purposes. Satisfies a lot of needs for Detroit.

    True detective?

I sent this over to the Water Cooler as the Creative Media Section is more meant for original artwork, photoshops, wallpapers, and gifs created by site members. I have been watching True Detective, its a very dark narrative so far and i'm very much enjoying it. What I also like is that each season will be an entirely new cast and story line. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey will only be in the first season's 8 episodes. For those unfamiliar, True Detective is a new HBO original series for 2014 and plays out like a cross between the movie Se7en and Law & Order style detective narrative drama. It's not for the light hearted, has a bit of a twisted aspect to it and can be portrayed as mildly disturbing. As with any live airing program, let's minimize spoilers as some catch up on episodes later in the week and others have not begun watching it at all.

Just because dekeyser was a free first round pick doesn't mean we need to just give away our pick now .... There's still a chance we don't get In the playoffs so it would be High pick for us .... If we trade it way it should be for non rental player

If they agree to an extension when we pick them up, that is fine. But to give up anything for either and have them walk this summer, no. How much sense would it make to say.... trade tatar for vanek, and then have him leave in July? That would be dumb. I would rather trade for others-like kesler, then sign Vanek this summer as a UFA. Yes we have the cap space to do both.

@Daubura, totes agree. Also, getting a top 4 dman gives guys like Smith more time to grow as a player.

I guess yes, but I'd really urge people not to get amped for the deadline. No matter how many TSN, NHL Network, or other trade deadline specials, remember how big of a let-down the past handful of years have been. They hype it up to get ratings and interest, but at most we'll see one big move. If that. League-wide. THat said, I know I'll still be hanging around and hoping regardless, haha.

It's the name on the front that matters. Ahh I kid, I agree and can't say I look forward to watching the Red Army play a US amateur team again. Herb Brooks won't be around this time.

The Rangers... the only team on his list? Really? The Rangers still haven't recovered since the retirement of Sean Avery.

Martin St. Louis has been one of the most respected and well thought of players in the NHL for a very long time. I don't think he turned into a ****** bag overnight. Something happened, we don't know what it was. When it comes out, he might be the bad guy...which is fine. But currently there's no reason to think that a career class act all of a sudden decided to act like a baby.

Jagr will pick the team he thinks gives him the best shot at another Cup. He won't come to Detroit. That's a big overpayment for Gilbert, especially since Holland said no rentals.

That and a scoring winger. This. If Vanek or Moulson are resigned they are not rentals.

I never argued that there wasn't tension between Bowman and Yzerman. I remember it well, and it's well established that several players on the team weren't happy with Bowman's defense first system. Especially after they got their ass handed to them by the Devils in the Cup finals. . Some even think the potential Ottawa trade was more of Bowman pulling a Herb Brooks move (when he threatened to cut team captain Eruzione on the 1980 Olympic squad) than something the Wings actually would follow through with. But there's a big difference between a player not getting along with a coach and saying that player demanded a trade.

Regardless of how close in the standings this team may be to these high picks, in the end our pick won't be anywhere near it. This team has too much pride to s*** the bed for a good pick. It isn't the Red Wing way, and I am proud of that. Also, nobody is saying Ehrhoff is gonna come in and elevate us to new heights. He would be a piece that fits in well and make our team faster and harder to play against with his puck moving ability. We're not expecting him to come to Detroit and be Lidstrom. Like I said before, this makes sense for trading for rentals. If we were to land 2 players like that now, they'd still be here. Along with Dats and Hank. I definitely don't think Holland should make a move just for the sake of it. But if the price is within reason and it a player who would be around beyond this season, go for it.

That's not what happened. The Red Wings were working on a trade with Ottawa and kept Yzerman in the dark about it. And Yashin was supposedly the name involved in the deal, not Alfredsson. Yzerman was obviously upset but his only requests were that the trade not drag on, and if he was traded he hoped he would go to a contender. It wasn't about forgiving Yzerman. The fans were mostly outraged when they found out. it was forgiving Bowman and Wings management. I think it was Ilitch who ended up killing the deal. The only similarity is both St. Louis and Yzerman both played their asses of for their team while the drama was going on. As for Marty St. Louis, he has been a class act all of his career, so him asking for a trade because his feelings got hurt doesn't ring true. Or at least sounds oversimplified. It could very well have been that as a 38 year old, once he found out he wasn't getting a chance at a gold medal he wanted to be traded to have another shot at the Stanley Cup. Who knows.
