That's a pretty soft call on Ericsson too. Refs apparently think so too so they're getting involved. Every penalty this game has been pretty weak.

Pens aquire David Perron from Oilers

I know i'm new to this board, but i'm a longtime lurker, and it seems whenever another team makes a half decent trade, people here start either complaining we should have tried to get that player, or complain that Kenny has no balls and won't make any trades. The team is doing fine. We did'nt need Perron. Petry would be nice though...

    CapGeek shuts down

I've kept in touch with Matt on and off for years (for a short time he wrote about the Red Wings' prospects on this site before the turn of the century and branching out to Rivals.com and eventually RWC). We worked a bit on CapGeek together and this is truly sad news. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. I know the decision made tonight was an extremely difficult one for him....

Being a southerner and no Atlanta team to pull for the Preds are a sub team to cheer for. Also my brother and I met Peter Laviolette at the All Star game when it was in Atlanta he was really nice and accomodating let us take pics with him. My bro is a flyers fan so he liked pete from the flyer days. Good for nash and pete and southern hockey.

Only on LGWs would we ***** about Holland not trading for a guy the that the team has no use for.

Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Franzen, Tatar, and Nyquist are better than Perron. Weiss may be once he gets a scoring role again, and Sheahan is turning into a better player as the season progresses. Abdelkader and Helm both play specific roles, and Jurco needs to stay on a scoring line. There is no room for Perron, or a winger of similar ability. They need a winger with size who uses it and can score, or an upgrade in the top 4 D. Anything else is just trading to make a trade, which is usually counter productive.

No Alumni game for this year's classic because Peter Bondra couldn't play every position on the ice for the Caps and Dale Hunter is still not welcome in most NHL cities...including Washington. Without those two they're short on quality alumni in the Nation's Capital.

Good job Bettman, the NHL had something great going on and yet in a span of not even 7 years they've managed to absolutely destroy it by: 1. watering it down with the Stadium Series 2. rehashing the same teams again and again 3. matching up two teams that don't have any rivalry nor hatred going on If the NHL is serious about this thing, they better have a Bruins - Habs matchup at Fenwaypark - have the Dropkick Murphys as the opening act - next year. This also just proves what I've always thought the event itself is nothing, if the participating teams don't have a large enough following, rivalry and the conditions aren't there. Wings - Leafs had a record breaking 2,9 Teams that deserve one Wild, Avs (hate to say it but yeah...), Bolts, Habs... http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nhl-winter-classic-earns-lowest-rating-in-game-s-history-160140036.html

Yep. Z was right there. May have cost us a goal. Bulls***.

After watching other teams around the league, it's painfully apparent how desperately the Wings need a D-man who can get a shot through traffic from the point. So far this game the best one at it has been XO.

It'd be nice if the ref called the dive too, but ain't gonna happen. Are they playing this game at a library or something? I think I just heard the guy in section 103 Row 4 seat 3 try so squeak out a fart.

Babs is sucking the life out of these games trying to win 2-1 every night. The best stretch of hockey the Wings played this season was when they scored goals in bunches and played more wide open. The forwards are the strength of the team. I get trying to gut out wins a year ago, but it isn't necessary nor advantageous with the personnel anymore.

Having Ericsson on the ice at the same time as Datsyuk and Zetterberg hurts our offense. Just saying.

Pens aquire David Perron from Oilers

The years of unloading picks will catch up to them one day. They're gonna go to the cupboard for a call up and there won't be anything there.

Nobody ever wanted him 5 minutes before he was traded. Do we really want to be like the pens. Throwing away all our picks and prospects at the deadline every year for rentals and mortgaging the future

Jeez, how many divers can you fit on one team?

I've seen you mention this before. Personally I've never seen that side of David Perron. Sure he's not your typical soft finesse player, he's a good two-way winger who finishes his checks, but plays with an edge? agitates? dirty areas? pain in the ass? I wouldn't use any of those phrases to describe him. I think you have David Perron mistaken for David Backes. Acquiring Perron doesn't address a need for us. It would be a move for the sake of making a move. And that's why it'd be dumb.

I don't have a problem with the newer analytics themselves (admittedly I'm still sorting out what all the stats measure). The problem I have is how routinely they're misused and misinterpreted, including this article. They call Sheahan Detroit's best shot suppressor, then point out he starts more than 62% of his shifts in the offensive zone. So in one sentence they've drawn a faulty conclusion from the statistics and even included the reason why they're wrong. Very likely Sheahan isn't Detroit's best shot suppressor. When you start the vast majority of your shifts in the offensive zone, that means your opponent has to go a long way to register a shot attempt. Glendening on the other hand, starts in the offensive zone less than 33% of the time. Two-thirds of his shifts, he's starting in front of his own net, so there's going to be a lot more shot attempts from his opponent. Then in subtler ways, they often use language that draws conclusions not supported by the stats. It's not that Sheahan himself only "allows" 37.7 shot attempts per 60 minutes of play. It means that when Sheahan is on the ice, the other team only gets 37.7 shot attempts per 60 minutes of play. That's it. But people constantly make the logical leap that the statistic says something specifically that a player is doing on the ice. That's a HUGE difference.

"Mathfreaks?" Is this a thing now? Cuz, if so, we should start calling Babcock Mr. Mathfreak, since he luvs teh mathz. Also, we should stop using numbers altogether. Goals, assists, PP%, PK%, faceoff %, shots on goal, shots against, scoring chances, blocked shots, turnovers, takeaways, wins-losses-OT, save percentage, GAA, hits... WHAT MATTERS IS FIGHTS. YOU CAN'T MEASURE TOUGHNESS WITH A CALCULATOR. BUT MATHFREAKS DON'T GET THAT. CUZ THEY DON'T ACTUALLY WATCH THE GAMES.

I respect Mirtle, Yost and all their other mathfreaks but as soon as I see their name ---> skip article. If I wanted to read math stuff I'd look somewhere else and not at a sports site...with a horrible design
