Marchenko has looked solid the same way that most of our defensive prospects look solid when they're brought up: they do they're best to stay out of trouble, don't bring much attention to themselves, and occasionally do something offensively. And of course Marchenko looks a bit better than Oulette because he's right-handed, which gives us a new dimension. But for as much flak LGW gives Smith, he's solidly on a level above all of Oulette, Marchenko, Lashoff, Kindl, and any other defensive prospect we currently have. And Marchenko's right-handedness isn't enough of an advantage for me to trust him over Smith in the playoffs. We're essentially upgrading our right-handed defender from someone with no experience, to someone with quite a lot of experience. But oh my gosh our defensive depth: Kindl, Lashoff, Oulette, Marchenko, maybe even Sproul all NHL-ready. That's almost a whole defensive team of players we aren't dressing.

    Pulkkinen sent back to GR

Unlike Jurco, if Pulkkinen isn't scoring he isn't doing much. I like it. He's not ready to consistently contribute in the NHL. Particularly for a team that's looking to finish strong and position itself for a playoff run.

People are just looking for ANY reason to be negative. Kenny makes two great trades for the first time in forever, and people still slaughter him. I'm as skeptical of the "kicking tires" and "we like our team" crap, but the man deserves his due. We got better in the last 2 days and have just as good a chance of any team in the East to go on a run.

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice 3m3 minutes ago Lamoriello said there were other offers for Zidlcky and "better" offers, but because of no trade, Zidlicky had control where he went. But.... but.... nobody wants to come here!

This is correct and a great point. A lot of these people who want superstar player X because he scores this many goals and this many assists, that's not all that goes into a GM's decision. They don't make trades just by looking at stats on nhl.comIf Detroit got Mike Green in the offseaon, great! Babcock would have a full season to teach him the required defensive responsibilities of the game, the system and the team. One thing to think about, besides his offense, Green's hockey IQ might bot be that high. He might not learn the defensive side of detroit's system before the playoffs. Shooting and scoring come naturally to Green, where defense doesn't. Zidlicky might put up some numbers, but he will for sure be in the right place at the right time defensively, and when you only have 20 games to settle in, the defensive responsibility is a lot more important to have. I hope that made some sense.

What is there to get? We picked up 2 legit veteran players and gave up prospects who are clearly not even close to playing in the NHL. We gave up a couple of picks which we can afford to do considering our prospect pool is pretty damn deep. It's all about what you can afford to give up and what you need. We needed another right handed d man and got one.

Nyquist sucks in the top six. He's a sweetheart, but a waif. Let him eat up third line opposition while the adults do the hard work against the big boys.

Why all the hate for Smith?! He has had a very good season and simply doesn't get PP time that he SHOULD get. The D pairings will be: Kronners- E D-Q Smith- Zidlicky

Wings are 16-3-3 against the West, Rangers are 13-3-5 and Pens are 12-4-2.

Like that matters. We are a young team right now. 07-08 We had 2 40+ year olds and 7 other 35+ year olds and won the cup. Right now our team has 5 35+ year olds. With the Cole, Zidlicky addition. What are you going to be negative about next so I can refute that too?

Great move for the price. Zidlicky will be a good fit. Kenny did a great job at the deadline for a change, now it's time to go on a run.

How old are you? May I ask? I turn 29 this month and I've followed the Wings religiously my entire life from age 8. For some reason i actually retain most of the generally useless history, info, players, trades, and dialogue I've heard along the way. I've followed the Wings for the entirety of Holland's tenure as GM and I have a particular addiction to information I've come across about NHL front offices. I like to think, as a fan, I'm about as informed as I can be enough to make the claims I do. Holland has done a lot of things right in his time with the Wings, but he also had an All-Star cast of Front Office support along the way...not limited to Dellevano, Scotty Bowman (who I believe brought way more than people even thought...and they thought he brought a lot), Nill, Mark Howe, and several others. But since those people have started moving on, his ability to make good trades has nose dived. If Babcock creates good coaches, I believe Holland was created by other good front office people. HE does not seem to be a great stand alone GM. The two things that he is most credited for are also other peoples jobs (cap management and scouting). This is far more than vibes bro, but thanks for playing.

He isn't alone. There isn't a whole lot not to like about these guys through 60 games.

I'm sure he's kind of bewildered in a way and once it sets in he'll feel fantastic he was traded to the greatest sports organization in the world

100% we won this trade. We can make a cup run this year with the addition of a decent defender, we have PLENTY of bottom 4 defencemen in the pool, we can afford to lose one. Especially one who couldnt crack it in the minors Janmark has 2 games in america, we'll survive.

Two prospects that were buried behind better prospects here, for a guy who can help us this year and perhaps beyond if signed. The prospects get a more reasonable shot a making the show, we add some size and grit. Looks win-win to me.

I'm not sure there really needs to be a debate about it. You shouldn't belittle people, ever, if you can help it. I'm sure Morgan Reilly isn't a total dick. He just said a total dick thing. Secondly, we (as a part of the hockey community) absolutely SHOULD do our best to enforce social, cultural, and behavioral norms. It's called civic responsibility. I want my children, friends, family, and neighbors to be able to share in the sport I love...because I love it. And none of them, ever, should feel excluded because of who they are or what they choose to do. However, I can't say that I'm surprised that Frank feels the way he does. This is a guy who once said that people who don't like fighting in hockey are "homosexuals". And regularly references "sissy hockey". Fortunately people like Frank here are in the minority. Positivity, inclusion, and openness are winning. And people like him are losing. And one of these days everybody with that point of view will either be forced to come around, or else be exposed for the narrow minded, hateful, ethically bankrupt dinosaurs that they are.
