I should have specified that only the first line of my post was responding to your post. It was more at others earlier that suggested trading him or just getting rid of him. And I don't think you're response is aimed at my post either since it's not close to what I said. He's lost the #1 spot rightfully for the time being. I don't even think he should have been declare #1 so early on in his career when he struggled for that long last year and Jimmy is still a very good goalie. I'm saying he's a young goalie who I do feel will get there. Jimmy's getting older and we're a team building for the future - why would you get rid of the only goalie in your system that will reasonably be expected to be a starter in 5 years? (Luongo's 37 so maybe Howie could do it, but that would be the end of career and I think it'd be a stretch). Finally, there's many other reasons people are high on him that you didn't mention. A big one is the Calder cup that he won in his rookie year in the AHL. And his stellar play in the AHL in general.

    Conflict in the Crease

Oh come on. If it's asinine to hand the reins to Mrazek, how is it any less so to keep Howard, who has shown the exact same unreliability over the course of 7 years? If anything, you should think keeping both is the absolute worst thing we could do. Getting rid of one would at least create the opportunity for someone more reliable, plus ease our cap situation. And if we're getting rid of one, Howard makes the most sense. There is no future commitment. Mrazek may or may not be the long-term answer, but it should be pretty obvious by now that Howard for sure is not. What baffles me is that people can mock the hype for Mrazek while simultaneously jerking themselves raw over a 17 game stretch from Howard.

He's only been on the full time roster this year and last year. Edit: plus half the year before - i forgot - so about 2 full years. I think keeping the 32 year old goalie and getting rid of the promising 24 year old would be a horrific decision for our future. Sure, Howard's playing better now and could be better next year or 2, but we're not winning in these years. And we have no one else in the system projected to be a starter. I'm kind of amazed the extent to which people have turned on Mrazek. He's lost 11 games this year - I'm not sure how many people would consider bad games for him, but to me it's less than that number. Some may call this unfair, but I found it interesting: Even with Mrazek's current horrible stats (which make up a larger portion of his career) he and Howard have almost identical career stats: Mrazek: GAA: 2.44, SV%: .916 Howard: GAA: 2.43, SV%: .915 That suggests that overall, Mrazek's been on par with Howards play over the years. I'll go with the goalie that showed to have the higher ceiling and in the developing years. Or if we have both for the next couple years, I'm good with that too and we'll have insurance rather than betting on one horse.

    Who Didn't Show Up?

Sandstrom is still feeling guilty about scoring 0 goals and 4 points during that playoff run, despite playing on the top line with Yzerman. Hodson contributed as much to the Wings in 1997 as I contributed to writing the Beatles "Sgt. Peppers". He'd have to be some kind of ahole to actually show up. I mean did Mike Knuble or Mark Major show up? Will Sean Avery show up when they honor the 2002 team?

Should the players adjust to the system, or does the system Blash's running need to adjust to the players we currently have?

Anyone have a De Lorean and a flux capacitor? We have to go back and stop Kenny from signing these guys! Sent from my LGLS676 using Tapatalk

    Conflict in the Crease

Like I already mentioned, if you want to trade away Howard, I have no problem with that. That's not what I'm arguing. But if you're gung-ho about getting rid of Howard, you best trade for an established number 1 NHL calibre goalie because Mrazek has demonstrated he is currently too unreliable for the role, and Coreau has 2 games total NHL experience. I'm not arguing from the stance that Howard is necessarily the answer to the Wings problems going into subsequent seasons. I'm arguing that Mrazek isn't necessarily that answer either, which is something that for reasons beyond me just doesn't sit well with LGW.

    Who's to blame?

I agree Sheahan is having a bad year, but on the right line I think he can be effective. I remember last year in the playoffs really liking him playing on the 4th line with Glendening and Abby. Much better then Miller or Ott. I wouldn't be upset if we lost him though.

    Ken Holland's Achievements

Just and FYI, if you go to Kenny Holland on wiki and scroll to the bottom it lists the GM before Kenny Holland and that GM is Jimmy D and Scotty Bowman. Now it has been 20 years but seems to ring true in my memory. Scotty made the roster decisions and Jimmy added/subtracted the guys Scotty wanted to bring in or have moved. Scotty couldn't have threatened Stevie with trading him if he didn't play defense if he didn't have the juice. Scotty was the one that drove Coffey out of town. Scotty was publicly wanting Shanahan for weeks before he was brought in. Ramsey, Rouse, and Murphy were all brought here because Scotty wanted them. None of that is new. All has been beaten to death over the years. The part that changed is who builds the roster. Scotty used to make the decisions and the GM's would go get his players. Now Holland makes those decisions and forces (not meant as a negative) the players on the coach.

What would you do if you were GM

So first Holland is gone, so half my problems are solved. #1 Try to snipe Anaheim or Nashville's defense scouting and development group. This team hasn't developed a real top pairing D-man in over a decade. #2 Trade the any of the following in such a way that prospects/picks come back: Abdelkader, Tatar, Nyquist, Smith, Nielsen, Helm, Howard, AA, and Jurco. These are all complementary pieces. None solve any problem Detroit has now or in the future. #3 Play the next two years as a total youth movement. The team won't make the playoffs, but high draft picks, chemistry and experience>>>>first round exits. #4 Move Blashill back to GR, he was great there. Find a coach that has already handled transitions before. #5 Continue to rebuild until the team is closer to the floor than the ceiling. Once cap flexibility has returned then start to move towards contention through FA/Trades.

Howards cap hit is 5.3 million. Trading Howard for a 6th round pick is essentially giving him away, and if you pick up half of his caphit that means you are still paying 2.65 mil. Bring in another goalie at even 1 mil per year, that becomes 3.65. So all that to save 1.65mil? I would rather keep Howard as a backup.

    Ken Holland's Achievements

It's what have you done for me lately? Holland can take his impressive resume elsewhere. The struggles lately are his fault. Don't blame time or trends. He's overpaid players and made some bad roster moves. Blashill will take the brunt when he's fired, but Holland should take the main blame for this roster.

    2017 Draft

They're not going to get elite talent in the expansion draft, but the league isn't going to stick them with a roster that will challenge the old Caps team for worst of all time either. As far as the teams that have struggled for years go, that's on them. Should have hired a good GM and scouts and used their high picks better. Sent from my LGLS676 using Tapatalk

    Ken Holland's Achievements

Yzerman obtained Ben Bishop in exchange for Cory Conacher and a 4th round pick. He also traded Kyle Quincey in exchange for a 1st round pick, to some dumb ass GM (I forgot his name). He signed Tyler Johnson, who was a player nobody ever heard of. He drafted Palat in the 7th round. He signed Stralman, who's been a very good player for them. He also obtained Brian Boyle for cheap, who's been a major contributor to their team. There's more to Tampa's success besides Stamkos and Hedman. While Yzerman has been doing these things, Holland has made a fool of himself and now runs one of the costliest rosters in the league, despite severely lacking talent at every position. I know this thread is about Holland's entire history, and not just the last 5 years, but it's easy to see that Holland surrounded himself with smart people who have either retired or went to other organizations.
