    2017 Draft

While all the Draper/Maltby/organizational-philosophy-on-scouting-and-promoting-former-players talk is no doubt interesting in a way, I feel I should point out that the specifics have no actual foundation in reality. Draper is an assistant to Holland, not a scout. Maltby is a pro scout, providing input on potential trade and FA targets, and scouting upcoming opponents. Very different role than an amateur scout, who provides input on potential draft selections. Beyond that, the simple fact that the majority of scouts around the league were never anything at the NHL level is indisputable proof that what kind of NHL player someone was is completely irrelevant. This is how false narratives start. Random musings, lacking any substantial analysis and more often than not lacking simple fact-checking...then some fan eager for something or someone to blame picks it up and runs with it.

There Will Be Blood - Kris Draper

Love it. I remember The Game. I remember that low feeling of futility, I remember the madness, I remember the improbable late comeback, and I remember the OT winner. I was ten years old. It was one of the greatest, most cathartic moments of my young life -- and I wasn't even a resident of Detroit or Michigan (and I never have been, for what it's worth). God. That whole rivalry was really something else. People say that about so many pro sports rivalries, but this one really was one of the modern greats, even if it only lasted for a few years. I miss it!

Player's Tribune Article By Kris When jaw was wired shut Goes on to say that in Scotty's system he had to grind if he wanted to stay with the Wings. The $1 dollar man I don't usually think of our Roy/Colorado rivalry starting at the Forum, but it makes sense Sounds about right Crawford is a moron

He said it in between periods? Link or it's not true.

Also, I'm pretty sure Marchenko's goal was against us. Anyone can score against us, should only count as half a goal.

I agree about him not being a power forward in the NHL, that's just not his game here. I do think that some of his best games as a Red Wing have come when he's been at Center though. I'd much rather see him there for the rest of the year, getting experience. Honestly, we need him to develope into a top six C.

    I think you misspelled Kickazz

    Dylan Larkin... A powerforward?

Oh god... one of the most improperly used NHL player descriptors...

    The Blackhawks are back

I thought this thread was started in 2009. Then I looked, and saw it was started today. What are they back from? They won the Cup two years ago and had a good chance of winning it last year, but ran into a motivated St Louis team that eked them out in a tough series. What am I missing here?

    2017 Draft

Based on need, I really want to draft a top D-man... however, if we're going to draft best available, that HAS to be a center. The top end of this draft is pretty much all Cs and two Ds. I say draft a solid C now and go for high end D-men next season. Next season is the complete opposite of this year, and is LOADED with high quality D-men: Dahlin, Boqvist, Bouchard, Addison, Hughes, McIsaac, Merkley, Bicheler... This is why I think Holland should pass on Liljegren

I think Datsyuk has some sneaky rage. He would always come back a few minutes later after being hit and level the guy who did it. Always loved it.

Yeah he's more of a Rasheed Wallace

This is great, thanks for taking the time to set up all those quotes. I was only 8 or 9 when all of this was going on, but I can still remember watching it all on TV with my Dad and Brothers. Definitely some great memories.

They probably knocked him for retaliation. Thought it was clean but they must not like vengeful plays.

That's basically euro hockey rules and it's exactly what makes euro hockey so hard to watch. Hits and fights are down year after year and the best players are leaving for better leagues.

I think there's definitely a false narrative around Mantha's treatment by the coach. Mantha averages 16:42 per game. That's 5th amongst forwards. Only Z, Nielson, TT, and Goose average more. That's pretty favourable treatment for a rookie with a total 60 NHL games under his belt. If he's been getting benched every time he has an "off shift or a bad period" as Dickie says, he must not be having many. I don't think Mantha should have been scratched, but he hasn't been great in the last chunk of games. Maybe they're learning from the experience with Larkin last year where the hot rookie hits a wall and then slumps hard for the next half year or more. Maybe it's an attempt to stop that from happening. When Babcock was around this site made so many jokes about how we'd never see any young guys higher than the 3rd line. Now we have Blash, who put 19 year old Larkin on the top line most of last year, Mantha there this year, named Mrazek our #1 after his first full year (and hadn't really earned it). You can disagree with his treatment of some players, but this narrative of favouritism toward vets doesn't work very cleanly. He gave Vanek limited minutes, just like AA, and probably for the same reason of defensive short comings. He sat Ott a number of times and I think we waived Miller a couple of times.

Similar situation. We drafted Alan Quine in the 3rd round back in 2011, decided not to sign him, and he re-entered the draft in 2013, where he was selected by the Islanders in the 6th round.

    2017 Draft

Kozlov, Eriksson, Holmstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg I always forget Fedorov, Lidstrom, and Konstaninov are 89. 2000 through 2002 were also some big drafts for us. When I said 90s this is essentially what I meant. Also not arguing that it wasn't luck. They gambled and it paid off. Gambling is essentially luck. However, the only other team I remember that was willing to make gambles like this was NJD. Maybe Vancouver? I don't remember good

I definitely would have bought that jersey if he was on the team! And we could have had a fanclub called the melen-heads and worn cheese-head-like head gear. All the missed opportunities...

Agreed. But Jimmy played behind the same defense and didn't allow anything close to the number of goals Petr has let in.

The Buck Stops WHERE? With WHOM?

A goos coach takes what his players do well and makes use of it. A bad coach has a rigid idea of what they need to do and expects them to conform, and it usually doesn't work. Sent from my LGLS676 using Tapatalk
