I remember that, before Howard got injured they showed a stat in which Petr had more goal support than Jimmy and, back then, he was leading the league in GAA. I'm not saying Petr should play over JImmy, but they cannot be left out to dry like that. I found this http://thehockeywriters.com/jimmy-howard-needs-help/ "The Red Wings have scored just 18 goals in the 15 games Howard has played, including the one goal against Arizona, which is 1.2 goals per game. In contrast, the Red Wings have scored 46 goals in the 18 games Mrazek has played or a 2.56 goals-per-game mark." "... It’s almost as if there is more urgency when Mrazek is in net, as the team knows he is 24 and still learning his way around the NHL in his second full season."

If he wants to protect his job he needsto go with the better goalie and that's Howard whether you like it or not.

I think Blashill knows that the next week or two is going to define whether he has a job come the new year. As much as Mrazek fans hate to hear it at this moment Howard gives a low scoring team the best chance to stay in a game. If you were Blashill you would do the same thing. Start the guy who's been the teams MVP to try and save your job. Unless Mrazek somehow finds his game from the first half of last season don't expect him to get a majority of the games until the Wings are way out of the playoff race. Svech cant score with top 6 mins in the AHL so we should promote to top 6 mins in the NHL. Rightttttt.

and if my memory doesn't fail me, I think the year before it was the other way around, Jimmy was getting more goal support than Petr. Remember the game against the Caps, in which Petr had a shutout and we won by just one goal? Imh, I'd go with the goalie with the hot hand and get the rest of the team to step it up. This is nearly identical to my entire train of thought. Howard is the better goaltender right now, I know it, and literally the entire team knows it. There is a confidence and urgency problem. They feel more comfortable that Howard will back them up in a game that they don't have to give their all in and still have a chance to win. With Mrazek in net, they feel like they need to put up more offense to counteract the goals he is going to allow because of his youth and inexperience. I think this sums up most of the debate here on the forums and the real-life situation. Most of us are more confident in Howard's play because he's been so much better. It's the same with the team, knowing Howard has been so much better at bailing them out in games than Petr has. As a result, there is more desperation play in front of Mrazek knowing he's very capable of giving up 3-4+ per game. So what's the winning formula? Allow more goals and put up more offense, or allow less goals and try to win the tight game? In this respect, I go with Mrazek, the lesser of the two that brings out the greater offense as a result of being unable to steal a game like Howard can. It equals more wins, which gets you to the playoffs, while resulting in a much worse goals against average and being in a situation with a goaltender that currently can't single handedly win regardless of the output. But for the fans, Mrazek, currently as he is, is incapable of holding a team on his back like the NHL elite goaltenders can.

Really cool Howard would be a guy I'd be proud to have a jersey from others are Z, Danny D and Larkin

You are really grasping at straws if you somehow believe that having Mrazek in net makes the team score more. They play the exact same piss poor system with both goalies. In fact if you compare the games they didnt split because Mrazek was pulled the team allow fewer shots with Howard in net while virtually generating the same amount of shots for. One could say they play that piss poor system better with Howard in net.

I can't imagine guys of their calibre agreeing to one year deals with a team that's blowing it up. Nobody wanted to sign in Toronto under those circumstances. All they could get on a one year deal was Parenteau and nobody wanted him.

The point on Jurco goes beyond this year. Jurco was kept in the NHL when he wasn't ready and spent a lot of time scratched or on the 4th line when he could have been getting good minutes in the AHL and developing his game. Then he was kept on the 4th despite the fact that he didn't play a grinder-type game. This should be something of a warning against bringing someone like Svech up who isn't ready yet. He has 8 pts in 24 games in GR. In the NHL that would probably be around 3 pts and he would end up as the extra forward and needlessly get him frustrated. Let him find his footing in the AHL first.

What about Em-Dog? Ahh I miss TheAxe/Bill Berzeench. It's a good thing he's still around with his sock account.

And howard starting after a bad game. Petr had a bad game and is still sitting for it. Hobestly we have the dumbest coach. He can't handle lines or goaltending.

    Jeff Blashill

I have pretty much have the exact same interpretation of him. Always respected and liked the guy. Also part of the reason why I don't think he's done after STL. He's just tired of being on the chopping block there, and so he's making the decision for them since they seem to keep flirting with the idea of firing him but can never pull the trigger. Get him on our bench please.

I'm with kliq here. I blame much of our problems on system and coaching. Far to defensive, far to cautious. They are forced to play the defensive first, work and grind style for years know and it shows. Columbus is a great example. Just take a look what Tortorella did with them. They are playing a highly effective, high risk fast playing style and are successful with it. Torts of all coaches! I always regarded Blash a much more competent coach but right now I'm not so sure.

Like who? Lashoff? The rest of the team are legit NHLers. Sure we've had to call up some kids like Sproul and what not, but every team has to do this when the injuries role in. Besides the D this actually pretty deep team on paper. We're a team of 2nd and 3rd liners, we don't have elite talent, but don't have absolute crap talent either. AKA average. DOOM N GLOOM!

There are also elite players on garbage teams, there is no rule of how many top players make a team bad, average or good. Please explain to a Colorado Avalanche fan how having a couple elite players automatically make you a good team, or Oilers fans pre McDavid. I am not saying that right here in 2016 we are a great team, I agree changes need to be made. I want to trade for a 1D as much as anyone, but I am realistic and see how hard that would be for any GM. My issue is when people are so over the top with their thinking. People are not "fanboys" if they still like this team, they are not "haters" if they dislike the direction. This team is not elite, this team is not garbage. We are an average team going through a rebuild and our kids have progressed at a slower rate then what our vets have regressed. Holland has signed some players to good contracts, some players to bad contracts. Its like some on here think you have to pick a side and you are either pro everything, or anti everything. That is not my way of thinking as I like to evaluate every decision without emotion for what it is.

Oh please negative Nancy. There's a rule now that you must have a few legit top line forwards or top pair D in order to be average? News to me. I thought you just needed a team full of average players to be average. But that would make too much sense I guess.

Are you under the impression that Columbus is a bad team? I'm not trying to sound like an ass here, but you do realize that teams can be good without having a media darling right? Columbus is 2 points out of being tied for #1 in the NHL Also, I was at the Joe tonight, and it was pretty full. Sure there were empty seats, but most were in the corporate sections, that means someone paid for them but never showed up. As long as the Wings are getting paid I dont think Ilitch cares that much if fans don't all show up to a random Tuesday night game against Arizona.

Say what you want about the roster, but almost every player on our team is playing closer to their floor then their ceiling. This is a coaching issue. With a better coach do I think we are contenders? No. Do I think we play better? Yes I do.

I'm okay with Larkin and Athanasiou playing center, but I'm not okay with them being our top two centers. As of today both Zetterberg and Nielsen are better slotted as our one / two in my opinion. You really think Svechnikov has earned a spot on this team with his 8 points in 24 AHL game? He's not close to being ready. We don't need to mismanage another highly touted prospect, the same way we did with Jurco. Tatar hasn't been great so far this season, and I get frustrated with him as much as anyone. I'd move him off that top line for sure, but no way would I scratch him... 14 - 40 - 39 72 - 51 - 62 21 - 71 - 26 8 - 43 - 15 / 41

Frk is a poor skater which is why he has been released and sent back to the minors twice now. he has an awesome shot, but it doesn't do him any good at the NHL level. he isn't able to get to the goal scoring areas of the ice.
