Ranking 30th in points, 32nd in points per game, 21st in power-play points, 51st in time on ice among all defensemen equals "middle of the road vet"?... Green is a solid top three defenseman on any team, top 2 on most, number one on ours, and we should just let him walk? He's well worth $4.5-5M for another 2-3 years.

Nothing. If we can't land a franchise cornerstone, we shouldn't be signing anyone outside of plugs on short term deals to fill out the roster that can be flipped at the deadline.

Everything in this post is pure speculation and bulls***. Also Jeff Salajko was Mrazek's goalie coach. Same guy that coached him in AHL. But you know, keep making excuses.

We'll we're close in that we probably only need a few elite players. How we get those is a whole other question. If we had 2008 Lidstrom, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg we'd be contenders. I think. Maybe. Sorry to be the devil's advocate, but this doesn't explain why he s*** the bed when he was gettings all the starts last season which is why he wasn't getting starts this year.

That shouldn't matter. You still move him and re-sign him this summer, assuming both parties are on the same page with him coming back (I think they are). Not trading Green at the deadline would be a monumental mistake.

usually I'm upset that Holland doesn't acquire enough players at the deadline, this year I'll be upset that he doesn't get rid of enough players! Ugh! I need another hobby!

Not really though. Anyone we have in the system that may be ready would fill a smaller role as a depth defenseman, not as a top pair defenseman. We had / have defensemen in the system that could fill Daley's role. I don't believe we have anyone that could fill Green's role right away. We have a ton of depth, we just lack the top end guys. I still see Green as a top end guy for another couple seasons. Daley, not so much. The biggest problem I see with our defense (and team in general), is we have too many guys playing above their skill level. Letting Green walk, and replacing him internally would even further that problem. I do think a player like Hicketts could have / can fill Daley's role now.

I'd be fine with that. Sign our RFA's, make a pitch to Tavares, then sign Green. I have a problem signing below average vets (Daley), not very good vets (Green).

Never heard of that anywhere. Please provide a link if you have it. I'd be interested. If anything, Bedard would have being more likely the one trying to change his style. Bedard helped Howard and Ozzy's more safe positioning style. Bedard was let go just as Mrazek was named the starter. All the discussion I saw was that Mrazek was close with Salajko and this hiring was a further commitment to Mrazek. There were articles to this effect at the time: Title: New Goalie coach Jeff Salajko has bond with Petr Mrazek https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2016/05/21/detroit-red-wings-goaltender-coach-jeff-salajko-petr-mrazek/84714326/ “Petr and I clicked right away,” Salajko said. “I enjoy coaching him.” And he makes direct comments to contradict you saying he was trying to change Mrazek: “It’s really not reinventing Petr’s game — it’s more of a fine tuning. Petr makes a lot of highlight reel saves.” https://www.therecord.com/sports-story/6693155-kitchener-native-salajko-joins-red-wings-as-goalie-coach/ "One of my strengths has been my relationship with the guys and the trust," he said.

I agree. I think the belief that Yzerman is a pipe dream is overly pessimistic. People have to remember that Stevie captained this team into a dynasty. I would imagine that seeing this team fall into shambles weighs heavily on him. How would you feel if you built a successful business only to see it fail when you left? I do believe there is a chance that he would want to return to Detroit to rebuild this franchise to its former glory. Only this time as a GM, not as a player.

Ya, this is the first time we actually have a highly sought after player, Holland will probably see two 2nds and get all giddy and say yes! Sorry, I'm just setting myself up if anything better happens I can be pleased. My expectations have been very high for a long time, I'd rather be happy than yet another Holland shart.

The topic of conversation is what folks would like to see Green offered to return come July 1st. Nobody here is saying we should hold on to him for the rest of the season...

Are you serious? I know you are a huge Mrazek fan, but to claim that we are not in need of cap space in an effort to bash trading him seem a bit extreme to me. I think 99.9% of fans would agree we need to free up cap.

    Karlsson on the move?

I don't know about overrated. I don't really hear or see anyone overrating him, other than the small number of people that consider him "elite". He's definitely not elite, but I do think he is / will be a legit 1C (top 31 center) for a long time. I disagree that his speed is his greatest asset. I would say that would be his drive and determination. Which is the number one reason I believe he will reach his full potential. I never said Larkin was "untouchable". This isn't just about the value of Larkin. Obviously if that's all it took, I'd trade him in a heartbeat, but the entire package, it would be a tough call. And there's no saying that the package I suggested would even get the deal done.

    Michael Rasmussen

Yes the % goes down, but that is yet to be seen. For whatever reason the second round is where you get a ton of great Dmen. As always the draft is a crap shoot. Lets wait for him to play a few seasons in detroit before we put him in the HOF or call him a bust. If he becomes a #1c or a #2c or a #1 f does it really matter? Nope. We need him to become a 25 goal + per year player. I dont care if it is as a winger or center or if its on the top line or second line. BTW at the time of the injury Rasmussen had played 22 games and had 16 goals and 31 points. Just for a reference Tippett had also played 22 games and had 14 goals and 31 points. Point is same production.

Seattle is not too far from tricities, and I have clients in the tricity area, so I've caught a few games. Kid is absolutely dominant. He is Mantha but with the intangibles. Huge physical player who scores at will and battles away from the puck. Mantha is most comparable to a Franzen type. Ras is more comparable to Shanahan. Who would u rather have? I'll take Shannyn bois
