    That lazy Mantha....

rant/ I don't understand the concept of rubbing people's opinions in their face when a situation changes on a message board where we are all a fan of the same thing. No one who thought Mantha wasn't cutting it *didn't* want him to turn it around. People weren't rooting for him to fail, they were pointing out that he was most certainly not living up to his hype--whatever the reason. I'm glad Mantha is doing well. I want him to become an absolute superstar. I'm glad he is starting to rock it. That doesn't change the fact that he previously wasn't, nor does it make the people who pointed this out idiots. I hope he has turned a corner, and we never have to wonder what the hell his problem is ever again. /rant

Not sure how I feel about this move. We're already pretty deep at center and Oates is past his prime.

    Goalie Battle

All I'm going to say is this is. The last time the Red Wings won a Stanley cup. we had a goalie tandem. Osgood and Hasek split 50/50 during the season. Hasek was the starter in the playoffs. He didn't do well the first few games and we switched to Osgood. Osgood did really well. Turns out having 2 goalies with the ability to play at the NHL playoff level works out if one of them doesn't perform well.

Wings are not signing Stamkos, nor should they even be near the 12 million he is going to get.

If we pursue the trading Howard line of thought, we have to consider who gets bumped up. If Mrazek got hurt, do we have a viable starter to fill in? I'm not so sure. Everyone says not having one starting goalie means your goalie situation is insecure. I disagree - the best part about the Howard/Mrazek duo right now is that our contribution from the goalie position is more secure than any other team in the league, even if there's an injury.

    That lazy Mantha....

What gets me is the statement of facts about what he WILL do. No maybes, or I thinks, or ifs. He WILL score 30 goals, he WILL be great. Nobody knows. He could be that good. He could be a 20 goal 40 point winger you have to play on the third line and find the right matchup for every shift. Moat likely I think he'll score around 25 goals, play mediocre in his own end, and be constantly criticized for not using his size and lack of effort. In other words, French Franzen. Frenchzen, if you will.

And I do think it's knee jerk considering this thread, and most of the opinions herein, didn't spring up while we were regularly beating good teams. Nobody was rushing around to talk about all the changes we needed to make when we were busy beating Montreal in regulation. But lose two games and here we go. Look back through the GDT's and see how many people were saying "I know we're scoring goals, winning games, and even getting points in our loses...but dammit we need roster changes". They weren't. But I'll give you one thing. Our win percentage when leading after two periods IS low. So low, in fact, that I'd argue its an anomaly. So low that its almost a freak thing. So low that MUCH worse rosters aren't even comparably bad. And as such, it's probably not something a roster change is going to fix. THIS is a mental thing. And probably a usage thing as well. Changing around bodies for depth players, who probably aren't going to be on the ice late in games anyway, isn't going to address the issue.

Love these GDTs, thanks to all of y'all who work on these. Would love a big win here tonight, tired of blowing away leads and giving away points to bad teams. While, Datsyuk hasn't looked like his prime self this season, I still think he's looked pretty good out there and is getting/generating tons of chances. I wanna see him finally break out this season in tonight's game. Here's a little look at what he can do in a single game against the Canucks (thankfully they won't be in those weird jerseys this time):

It's a real shame people here remember Franzen as soft when in reality he was our only too 6 guys with an edge. Other teams hated plying Franzen, in his prime of course

improve the PP by acquiring the correct net front presence, I ike Abby, but he is not a PP specialist....AND SHOOT THE FRICKIN PUCK! Stop with the fancy pussyfoot passing! 9 times out of 10 Kronwall passes the puck even when he has time to lean into a one time slapper! Stop being so fancy, go back to basics! Shoot hard and shoot often! Pummel the net! You got Mike Green with a rocket shot. shoot it! A huge net front presence, and put a guy in the slot on opposite sides of the puck....shoot it! The main problem is not shooting and looking for that perfect play. Sure it looks beautiful when it works 10% of the time, but the other 90% its just one too many passess....BLAST THE PUCK! Even in front of the net, you're always told that when you shoot it, try to drive it through the back of the net, stop with the soft little taps at the puck! Simple....I'd teach them for half the cash Oatsie is getting! But its nice to see him (kind of)back within the organization.

The only thing I could say after seeing it last night was "WOW". It's too new and too shiny right now for me to put in any kind of definitive ranking, but it's easily better than all of the prequels. GO SEE THIS MOVIE. You won't be disappointed. The Force is strong with this one.

    That lazy Mantha....

He was 20 last year, and no, 6 weeks injured does not excuse 6 months of mediocre performance. Laziness is an over-used criticism, but it was hardly the prevailing opinion anyway. His season last year was disappointing, whether due to laziness or something else. Furthermore, 5 goals in 18 games and a bit under a point/game is hardly anything to get excited about (nor is at as good as Nyquist was). He's been good lately with 3g, 8p in his last 4 games, but he also had just 2g, 7p in his first 14. He needs to keep up his play for considerably longer before we re-annoint him our future superstar. Assuming he stays healthy and plays 70-ish games, anything less than around 30g should be considered just as disappointing as his first year. And I wouldn't bother getting excited unless he starts putting up Pulkkinen-type numbers.

Agreed. Anything would be better than wasting Pav's final few years with Helm on his wing. I would definitely like them to at least give Mantha a look sometime this season.

Not directed at your comment specifically, but I hear this thrown around a lot. I agree, but realistically how do you prepare your team to lose one of (if not the best) defensemen to ever play the game? Yes, you can go out and sign a Shea Weber, but that's still going to fall short, especially when OTHER players on your team that you thought were pretty decent are exposed as mediocre in his absence. We didn't just lose Lids, we "lost" everyone on the team that he elevated.
