    Farewell To Joe Louis Arena

I make the voyage to Detroit and / or Toronto every year with a few of my buddies to see a Wings Leafs game, sometimes a couple. Unfortunately though, I wasn't able to afford to go this year because I've been forking out crazy cash for my upcoming wedding (next month)... It turns out, those same buddies I make the trip with every year are a couple of the best guys ever (despite being Leaf fans). They woke me up this morning banging on my door at 7am to tell me they have a surprise for me (early bachelor party). They handed me a ticket for the game Saturday night against the Leafs. I thought for sure it was some sort of sick joke, but anyway, packing my bags now to fly to Toronto, staying there tonight and flying to the D tomorrow. Never been so f***ing pumped in my life. Can't believe I'm getting down to the Joe one last time. Hopefully we can pull out the W! LGW!!!

this factors into the why.. and weren't they planning on televising the expansion draft? Making the lists public could potentially get more fans to tune into that..

Personally I love it! From the NHL's perspective, seems like such a dumb move.

    Farewell To Joe Louis Arena

38 years old. I live in western Canada, been a Wings fan for 25 years and I finally got to the Joe for 2 games last weekend. Surreal experience from walking up the steps at the entrance to drinking in the Olympia club in the bowels of the Joe. Couldn't have been happier to step foot in the old place. The atmosphere was amazing even in a losing season. It sure is an old barn. Narrow concourse, 1000 degrees inside, lack of bathrooms but when that pucked dropped I knew I was in one helluva special place. That being said I can't wait to go back to Detroit and watch a game in Little Caesar's.

this season I could finally fulfill a life long dream of going to Detroit and specifically to go visit the Joe and finally see my beloved Red Wings LIVE. I always wanted my first game ever to be there and nowhere else, so it was now or never. My most fond memories of the Joe happen in a 16 day span visiting Detroit last January. First Game, First Win: Penguins 3-6 Red Wings. I couldn't believe I was climbing the stairs I've seen on so many broadcasts, standing next to another fellow Red Wing Fan on his first game at the Joe ever as well. to walk through those doors and see Mr. Hockey, and the production line in all of it's glory. I've must have walked 6 times around the Joe, looking at every column, every mural, every poster, everything, trying to take 17 years of waiting all at once, not wanting to miss anything. Then went through that tarp and like a bright flash that blinds you for a second... our Joe in all of its splendor, it was truly breathtaking. To see the rafters, Stevie Y's banner, the ice, the smell, the noise. I couldn't believe I was finally home. 3 periods later and I was signing Journey at the top of my lungs. We had not only defeated Pittsburgh, we outscored them... for me it was so special and meaningful for a first game ever. Most Exciting Moment: started chanting AA! AA! right when he soared thorugh center ice on that 200 ft play. 9th row to the left of Fleury so got a great glimpse of the goal. That's me in red inside the circle. With my first jersey ever, 17 year old Starter. As old as my passion for the Wings. We've been through hell and back together. Shutout at the Joe: Canadiens 0 - 1 Red Wings. Met my favourite broadcaster Ken Kal before the game started, got a few pics with him, he signed a jersey (on which I managed to get Mantha, AA, DeKe, Smith, Nielsen, Nyq, Coreau, Chelios and Al Sobotka as well) and a copy of all the stats he usually gets for each game, signed an all... Sat 3rd row on the Isle by the Zamboni, right behind Price. Most thrills on a game: Bruins 5 - 6 Red Wings: Yeah that was one for the books, what a game... came back from a 4-1 deficit after they chased our goalie. tallied back to tie it at 4 and then, just like that, got scored on right away, only to tie again with less than 3 minutes in reg. some 3 on 3 hockey and then on to the shootouts. Got to see Vanek and Nielsen score, and win our 3rd in a row at home. Most disappointing game, Maple Leafs 4 - 0 Red Wings My 5th and last game ever at the Joe, I hadn't planned on attending this game, so I had to re adjust my whole trip in order to do so, get new plane tickets, called work to get a few more days off, get a new place to stay, etc. But I didn't want to miss a chance to see Babs, Matthews, Marner, etc. and specially another Original 6 team, who knows when I'll be back, if ever... Anyways, I did all this only to witness our team get handled and held scoreless, disrespected and outchanted at our own house. I had a sign and all, but kept waiting until halfway the 3rd to have it out. because I was so into the game and didn't want to block anyones view since we're all waiting for our Boyz to perform another Detroitian ComebackTM that just never happened. I stayed inside the lower bowl for as long as I could approached the benches, the sin bins, stood on the SRO area and just took a moment in silence, just me and My Joe. saying goodbye. I peaced out! my beloved Joe before heading to the Olympia for one last drink. In a table by the entrance were some Leafs fans shouting "Shutout!" to every Wings fan that passed by. After they did it to me I took out my sign and showed it to them. the heckling turned to fistbumps and Respects!, from them and some girls on other table. so It was all cool after that, To me that was amazing, how as hockey fans, we all understand what this sport means to us and how it moves us, no matter the team or the colour, or where we are from, we're all one big family, which happens to beat the crap out of each other from time to time, hehe, just one big beautiful family. Sorry for the long post but, LGRW!!! now and always.

Can we agree that you two both spend too much time together on the same threads?

Spent 12.3% of his time with Tavares in all situations. Come thru, the burn book's, lit. 1% on even strength. And since your tried to be a Einstein earlier and brought up Zetterberg and Datsyuk. They spent 37% together in all situations (compared to the 12% of Nielsen and Tavares) and 33% on even strength (compared to the 1% between Tavares and Nielsen). Not even close.

    Farewell To Joe Louis Arena

Got in Thursday. Stayed at the Motor City Casino. Friday morning we went to Felix Gatt's house. Not sure if you know the story but he was Howe's best friend. He has the most amazing collection of memorabilia that I've ever seen. 500-600 square foot basement packed floor to ceiling with signed pictures, jersey's, skates, gloves etc...you name it he's got it. It was amazing. The most down to earth guy too. Friday went to the game. Drove back to my buddy's home in Woodstock Ontario . Saturday like any respectable group of middle aged goofballs would do we decided to road trip it up the highway to Buffalo to watch the Leafs - Sabres game. Back to my buddy's house in Woodstock Ontario for the night. Back to the Joe Sunday for the game, another stay at the Motor City Casino on Sunday night and took the long trip home on Monday. Pushed the limits of what my 38 year old body can handle haha.

    Farewell To Joe Louis Arena

So many parts of the Joe that seem so old school ( obviously because they are ). We were in the Olympia Club in the Manhattan room and literally 15 feet from our table the Wings were seperated by a curtain loading up on their post game buffet meal. On Friday it was super hot ( 21 degrees celsius ) when we went in and they had the door open on street level about 20 feet from the Wings dressing room and a couple guys were kicking a soccer ball around. I tried to be that guy and poke my head in for a picture but the security guard was aggressive. My point being what kind or arena now a days has an outside door 20 feet from the dressing room lol.

That's a good way to look at it. Hopefully we'll start a new streak with the new arena next year.

First time in my lifetime there hasn't been red wing playoff hockey.. we could see it coming this season obviously, but it still feels weird to think that. The NHLs website got me with a few quotes: link: https://www.nhl.com/news/detroit-red-wings-25-year-playoff-streak-comes-to-an-end/c-288192312 Also it mentions that the Penguins and Blackhawks have the next longest active streaks at 11 and 9 years respectively.. if the pens tied the wings streak, it'd be the same year Crosby turns 44 and Malkin turns 45.. the Hawks would see Kane and Toews turn 45 the same year they'd have to keep it going long enough to tie it. Crazy when you really put it all into perspective.. thanks for the memories that have literally lasted a lifetime so far, Red Wings. Here's to starting another long streak and proving 25 years can happen again. Cheers!

    Farewell To Joe Louis Arena

I always lived far away from Detroit except a few years ago I unfortunately had to move to Ohio for 7 months for work. Took that opportunity to make it to one game in Detroit while I was there, and our tool rep on site got us free tickets. My experience was amazing, had chills the whole time and it's something I'll never forget (especially those nasty outdated bathrooms!).

Only Chris Chelios can stop Chris Chelios from being Chris Chelios, wait, ahem.. "Chris Chelios doesn't do what Chris Chelios does for Chris Chelios. Chris Chelios does what Chris Chelios does because Chris Chelios is Chris Chelios!"

Chelios is still upset about being left off most of the 2008 and 2009 playoff squads, in favor of Brett Lebda. I don't blame him. On top of that, Chelios got benched for most of the Winter Classic against Chicago in his hometown. I thought that was a dick move by Babcock.
