what the HELL??? Dallas "won" the Cup while standing in the damned blue paint. So suddenly now it's illegal again, when it wasn't then??? Edit: Someone tell Buffalo the 1999 Cup is actually theirs.... I give up

This is what happens when you lose a coach like Babcock. Slim chance the rookie NHL coach following him will be able to compare.

Help us Obi-Wan Green, you're our only hope.

Without Green and Vanek (and goalies), we don't have much tonight

So Kenny just said Larkin has been moved down to the 4th with Ott and miller...if you have any question what's wrong with this team, that should answer your question. Blashill has lost it.

Clearly the past proves that Lashoff is the better option since he was so elite for us before.

Just started watching the game (recorded it). Larkin on the 4th, Lashoff in for Sproul? I'm officially all out of faith in this organization, be it Holland or Blashill. How clueless can you be? Are we tanking? This is honestly the only believable scenario to me. I can't believe Holland/Blashill could display such ineptitude.

Combination of poor coaching and lack of talent. No top end talent means secondary players playing roles they can't handle, third liners playing second line roles that they can't handle, etc. Blashill isn't an NHL coach, either. The team had absolutely no chemistry or coherent system.

This seems to match what I think I've observed the past few years with this team. I feel like part of it is Blash is continuing with Babs' game, and therefore several guys who play really good offensive hockey are squeezed - round-peg-square-hole - into a defense first, dump-and-chase type of game. Maybe this is why so many guys have seemed like they were going to be huge, and fizzled. But maybe everybody plays this way now, and if you can't learn to, you're going to have problems. It worked in the past, but now that everybody's doing it, we can't stand out. I dunno. Probably not a clean answer to this question. And I thought you guys were cool...

Out of curiosity, what do you consider acceptable numbers from secondary scorers? Nyquist has 14 points in 25 games this year, which puts him on pace to score 46 points this year. Obviously not elite, but I consider just shy of 50 points acceptable for a secondary scorer. Are you expecting 60 or 70 points out of secondary guys? Tatar is hurt, he has nobody to blame but himself for not healing in the summer, but you cant use his production this year as a measure of his skill. If we are a team filled with 3rd/4th liners, have the worst coach in the league (you didnt say this, but others have), have an awful GM, and have AA, Abby, Helm, Howard, Marchenko, Smith and Betuzzi hurt, I have a hard time understanding how we are only 4 points out of a playoff spot with TB having a game on hand. The answer, people exaggerate how bad we are. If all these things were true, we would be dead last in the standings. I know we are not that good, I am not pretending we are something we are not, I am just sick of the hyperbole. Our issues are simple, our top/elite guys all regressed simultaneously before our young guys were able to replace them. Put a prime/healthy Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronwall, and Franzen on this team and we are contenders.

    Defense

The only way the Wings are getting a true #1 dman is if they develop one from in the system. They dont hit the FA market anymore and if you do try and find one via trade you are going to end up overpaying. The Wings have nowhere near the top end assets to swing a trade for a #1 dman without crippling the team worse than they were before. Simply put this is a hole that we can look forward to them having for a few more years atleast.

    Defense

The 1D position is one that IMO is the hardest in all of sports to acquire. They don't hit UFA anymore, they don't get traded as EVERYONE wants one, and drafting them is extremely hard as most of the elite d-men are late round picks due to their late development. Look at the 2008 draft as an example, 4 of the top 5 picks were D. Doughty, Bogosian, Pieterangelo, and Schenn. Half of them are nowhere near 1D. So even tanking to get a top 5 pick is a HUGE risk and guarantees nothing The answer? Draft a lot of d-men and hope one develops into a stud, or make a trade where you are not going to be fleeced. Just look at the price Edmonton paid for a guy that COULD be a 1D, they gave up Taylor Hall. This is not an easy answer. Damn you Suter!

I dont even think this is true, we are just missing a top pairing. Throw say Keith/Seabrook on this team, then our second pairing is DD/Green, third pairing Sproul/Smith and I think we have a damn good d. Everyone is playing a pairing higher then they should.

Our defense is AHL level, talent wise. Tape to tape passes and puck possession both start from the back end. If your defense sucks, you can't do either of those things. It's not a fundamental change in philosophy. We just don't have Lidstrom, Rafalski, Chelios, etc. anymore. Kronwall is too old.

Line combos are for video games. We have so many mediocre to below average players, that there's no way you can put together a line combination that will make this a good team.
