    2017 Draft

One of the many scouting reports on Rasmussen: Large competitive two-way centreman with skill and good feet. A gritty, naturally strong player with mobility who wins most board scrums. He is a dominant player in the front and below the goal line. A mobile skater who is difficult to contain or move; he wins puck battles and scores. Intriguing prospect with upside offensively: difficult to contain, and effective vision and passing skills. Owns the front of the net on the power play. He might look for the pass over shooting, but he protects the biscuit well. Has an upright skating stride but gets there and shows jam when he greets you. His combination of power and skill is at the high end of this draft class, even though you might hope he would show a bit more effort all sixty minutes. A raw talent who may end up being the best player out of the West.

Looks like he goes to the net, is impossible to move when he gets there, and thinks shoot first when he gets the puck. We could use more guys who think shoot first.

I'm saying we feel he's a real good player, obviously he's got some real good size, and that's something we feel we lack in our forward group, obviously he's real good on the power play, obviously he's a real good he's a good real obviously defensively responsible responsible defensively real good big body boy oh boy atta boy kiddo way to go kiddo bingo bango he's big and the Wings needed to get bigger up front and that's exactly what they did this is the power forward we've sorely needed he's a dynamic player who can do it all he's probably the next Holmstrom except bigger and better and he's real good and good real and y'know we feel he gives us a real good package of real good defensively good real defense power play net front real good real big body. Defensively responsible.

I'm pretty livid, I'm not gonna lie. Having Vilardi fall to us and picking MICHAEL RASMUSSEN, the one guy I WANTED US TO NOT PICK, is the perfect cherry on our 2016-17 season.

When that pick came up I thought, Vilardi or Tippett? I wonder who Holland will take? And then he traded back and took Cholowski. No, wait? Listen, I don't know how this Rasmussen kid will pan out, hope for the best; but one thing is for sure, his career will be compared (at least around here) to Vilardi and Tippett from here on out, fair or not - no, totally fair. The same with Cholowski and Chychrun. And I don't know about you, but a future with Vilardi/Tippett and Chychrun is more tantalizing than the one with Rasmussen and Cholowski. But hey, I'll be more than happy to have my reservations and doubts proven unwarranted (I just don't think they will be). Sorry I can't be more optimistic.

It is pretty funny, we draft small and the narrative becomes "another small euro, come on Holland our team is so easy to push around!!!" We draft big and the narrative becomes "Oh thats just GREEEEAT, he has to be good because he's is big. Holland you jackass". There really is no pleasing the fans.

He's not even good at a lot of things. He's a hundred feet taller than his peers, he hangs around the net, he puts in easy goals. That's Michael Rasmussen. He's not a high-skill player. He's not a playmaker. He's not a naturally gifted goal-scorer. He's not a two-way force. He's big. That's it. I mean, I'm no NHL amateur scout. But, from where I stand, at this moment in time, this is an awful decision. Even if Vilardi or Liljegren isn't available and you have your heart set on Rasmussen, TRADE BACK A FEW SPOTS AND DRAFT HIM AT #13 OR WHATEVER. I hope I'm wrong. I hope Rasmussen becomes a franchise center. But, realistically, he's going to be another bottom-six grinder.

Does anyone honestly have faith in Holland or the management team anymore? If so, could you mail me what you're smoking because my stuff isn't strong enough.

Do you not like even strength goals? They all count the same, and there is a better argument to be made that if someone can score 5v5 they can score 5v4. Our issue is with coaching on the pp, and not having a good #2 quarterback behind Green.

From what I've read Vilardi was ranked higher for the most part, better upside. I don't hate the Rasmussen pick, but I don't really like it a lot either. I think if Holland really wanted Rasmussen he could have trade back a bit, or maybe even swapped the pick and Nyquist or Tatar for a good young D Sent from my LGLS676 using Tapatalk

Exactly. Draft picks are kind of a crap shoot. Sure they look good on their junior team, but it may not translate to the NHL. They might be in the wrong situation. Wrong coach. Wrong strategy. Wrong linemates. I'm not a big fan of hating guys that just literally put your teams jersey on their body for the first time tonight. Give the guy a chance to fail before calling him a failure.

Exactly. They overvalued his size. Vilardi was the best pick at this spot.

Because we want to see the best player available get drafted. Not projects, which is what he has done two years in a row now. Two years in a row a gift fell into our lap (Chychrun last year, Vilardi or Liljegren this year) and he goes for projects. It's s*** drafting when it comes to decent first round picks.

Honestly, I think Holland is s***ting his pants when it comes to anything these days. Doesn't know how to operate in the the NHL. ...either that or it's the sake bombs and sapporo talking.

Juniors for 2 more years, then GR for 5 years, then waivers after that and he plays for another team briefly before hitting waivers again where KH picks him up again because of his size and compete level.

I think this as well. And that'd be the biggest problem if true. I'm a little bummed but then again, don't get paid to know who to pick.. so now we just hope for the best for Rasmussen. He's one of our top prospects now.. At least he's a huge center and goes to the net.
