Can we just put an end to this before it gets to "LW on Franzen/Hossa" levels. For one, let's stop acting like we gave ARI our first to take Datsyuk. We traded the 16th pick, and got back the 20th and 53rd. Not altogether different than a few years ago when we traded the 18th for the 20th and 58th. Or a few years before that when it was the 24th for the 35th and 48th, or before that the 29th for the 32nd and 75th. It was a fair trade even without them taking Dats' hit. We don't even know that Chychrun would have been our pick. We might have wanted Fabbro and felt confident he would still be there at 20, or even wanted Cholowski to begin with, or maybe we didn't really care and just wanted to add an extra pick. In regards to Nielson, he may have been an "impulse" signing, but he was also one of the top players available. His production last year was similar to other top UFAs, and he signed a contract similar to other top UFAs. Oddly enough, his production this year is also similar to the other top UFAs, as all the big names are down from last year. You can call it overpaid if you want, but that's what the UFA market is. And to address the topic; we don't have, and have not had, a problem attracting free agents. We may not get every one we want every time, but no team ever does.

Depends on your definition of "overpaid". Did he pay him above market value....no. Was it a bad signing for our team with our cap situation....yes. NYI offered him more then us, not 100% sure about the term/NMC though.

There aren't too many days or times I can tell you exactly where I was or what I was doing..especially 20 years ago. That day, that game, was one of them.

Did my 20th annual turtle pounding day sign make the TV feed? It was on the jumbotrom a few times.

IDK if it made the TV feed, but the turtle pounding day sign was on the jumbotron. First period, then the camera guy came back later looking for me, and they showed shots of the brawl in 97 interspersed with shots of my sign. I had "Good Bye Joe" on the other side of it, that made the jumbotron too.

So with these wins and OT losses lately, the Wings keep getting further away from that top 5 pick. There are now 5 teams behind the Wings in points and 2 who are one point and two points ahead. COL-43 ARI-63 NJ-66 VAN-69 DAL-71 *DET-72 WIN-73 BUF-74 I get that they can't just lay down and die in front of opponents, but they've pretty much been doin that all season, so why start playing your best hockey of the season in your final 15 games with a top 5 pick on the line? This team is so screwed.

But even when we're contenders, they would build up games where we'd have a chance to knock a rival out of the playoff race. It might be more fun to be a spoiler sitting pretty at the top of the standings, but I hope everyone on the team still especially wants to beat the team that has knocked them out the past few years. It would be more beneficial to lose out, but you want the team to keep the winning spirit. Lethargy can be highly contagious and can last beyond the year. Anyway, I don't think anyone on the team's really tanking. I do hope we're making decisions and giving opportunity (minutes) based on long term growth rather than short term wins at this point of the season. That can have some residual effects that some might see as tanking. It is a fine line to walk.
